Today we’d like to introduce you to Roberta Rogers.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
As I child I had a very creative Mother who painted. My Dad was a geologist who took us to many places in the Southwest and exposed us to a natural environment.
In college, I had a great buffet of art classes. In the last semester of obtaining a Master’s Degree, I took a watercolor class, and the proverbial light bulb went on over my head. The subject matter of historic architecture has been a continuous theme throughout 45 years of painting. Landscapes, portraits, florals, etc. have been included in the journey, but the history of architecture and cars have been the most engaging. Historic autos and architecture are really a metaphor for people and their experiences.
Working in other mediums has been a great learning experience, but watercolor is the best! In this time, there are many new papers, paints, and brushes available which are an inspiration in themselves. The magic of water mixing paint can be great fun or dangerous! The joy of color and shapes are expressed in appreciation for many places, and objects. For folks who are interested in painting, I share the encouragement from first graders. They have no fear and know when they’re done!
The light and color found in Southern Arizona are a constant source of inspiration. Tubac “Where Art and History Meet” is home for art and soul!
Please tell us about your art.
Viewers say that my work is “Cheerful.” Color has always been an inspiration, and the choice of a high key palette is the tool for achieving a personal expression.
The most enjoyable painting experience is “en plain air”. The influence of the natural environment provides extra inspiration and education. The sunny studio work in a controlled atmosphere is the usual painting location with a great view of Tubac and surrounding mountains. Before Tubac, was Flagstaff with great views of the San Francisco Peaks.
Art is such a great communicator, and I’m totally pleased when someone chooses one of my creations.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The biggest challenges now are uncertain times. There are many inexpensive sources for art which precludes customers from purchasing original art, BUT! Everyone benefits from having art in their lives.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work can be seen at The Purcell Gallery at 24 Tubac Rd, in Tubac, AZ.
In Flagstaff, I exhibit at “Art in the Park “,Fourth of July Weekend July 5,6, and 7. Also Labor Day Weekend Augst 31, Sept. 1, and 2.
