Today we’d like to introduce you to Riley Maynard.
Hi Riley, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Tidy Coops was born out of a stroke of luck and a shared passion. As enthusiastic chicken owners, my wife and I are active members of several chicken groups on Facebook. One day, we came across a post from someone in the group who was looking to sell their small business because they were moving from Arizona to San Diego. They already had a loyal client base of about ten customers and didn’t want to leave them without a reliable coop cleaning service.
My wife and I had previously attempted to start other businesses without much success, but this felt like the opportunity we’d been waiting for to truly become our own bosses. We decided to reach out to the seller, and after a series of discussions and a walkthrough of their operations, they chose to sell the business to us. We were thrilled about the opportunity and eager to grow what we believed was a fantastic business idea.
We’ve now been the proud owners of Tidy Coops for two months and have begun to steadily expand our services in Maricopa County and even down to Tucson. Although we are still in the early stages, we are confident that with determination, hard work, and perseverance, we can build Tidy Coops into a successful business. Our goal is to help many people keep their coops clean and their chickens happy!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Getting off the ground is always one of the hardest things to do. Even though we started with a few customers already in the pipeline, we are still working hard to get our name out there. We use social media to help grow our business by posting consistently and engaging with the chicken groups we belong to, sharing updates about our services.
Additionally, we have faced the necessary but time-consuming steps of setting up the business infrastructure, including forming an LLC, obtaining insurance, and setting up bank accounts. Each of these steps requires both time and money.
Originally, Tidy Coops was intended to be a side hustle to earn some extra cash. However, in early July, I lost my job, and this business has now become my primary focus. While it isn’t yet generating full-time income, I am dedicated to working hard every day to grow the business, build our brand, and spread the word to anyone willing to listen.
Our business is unique, which is both a blessing and a challenge. Unlike common services like landscaping, where a quick search yields numerous options, people don’t typically search for chicken coop cleaning services. The challenge lies in the niche nature of our business; fewer people have chickens, and even fewer consider hiring someone to clean their coops. This makes our marketing efforts all the more crucial.
We’ve been impressed with Tidy Coops, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Tidy Coops is a backyard chicken coop cleaning business dedicated to serving the valley. We provide our services to anyone in need of coop cleanings, offering one-time, monthly, bi-weekly, and weekly options. We pride ourselves on being flexible and accommodating to our customers’ schedules.
While our primary focus is on backyard chicken coops, we are more than capable and willing to clean up after other animals as well. Additionally, we are exploring the possibility of branching out into related services, such as minor repairs and maintenance for coops. We also offer chicken-sitting services, where we take care of your chickens while you’re on vacation. This includes daily visits to feed and water the chickens, letting them out of their coop, and ensuring eggs are collected and brought into the home. We have several other potential services in the works as well.
What sets us apart is that we are one of the only chicken coop cleaning services in the valley. We offer reasonable pricing that won’t break the bank. We are also chicken owners and promise to treat your chickens like they were our own!
We look forward to the opportunity to work with all chicken owners!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Resilience. This quality has been pivotal for us. My wife and I have embarked on several business ventures, with Tidy Coops being our fourth attempt. We are not afraid to take risks and understand that not every idea will succeed. However, our resilience allows us to learn from each experience and continue moving forward.
It’s essential to work hard and invest effort into every concept we pursue, but it’s equally important to recognize when an idea is no longer viable and to pivot accordingly. There is a certain art to knowing when to quit and move on, and this resilience has been crucial in helping us navigate the challenges and ultimately find a path to success with Tidy Coops.
