Meet Rekha Shah of Rekha Shah MD PC in East Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rekha Shah.

Dr. Shah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I initially started in medicine as a Gastroenterologist, working in a variety of settings from community hospital to academic centers. As a provider, I saw my patients regularly struggle with illness and navigating the complexities of the healthcare system: various diagnoses, unexplained maladies, and numerous treatments. It was not until my own illness that manifested as severe fatigue, joint and muscle pains, abdominal discomfort and food sensitivity that I, truly internalized how frustrating and difficult it can be to sit on the other side of the table. Over the years, I saw myriad specialists and followed, “the doctors’ orders,” like a model patient with little improvement. I could not help but feel that in my chronic condition, modern medicine was failing me. So, I did what my medical training had taught me: I searched for answers. In my journey to a deeper understanding of the body I studied Functional Medicine, an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual being to promote optimal wellness. This approach to healing empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying basis of disease. For myself, I used the principles of Functional Medicine to get back on my feet, treating myself for heavy metal toxicity, mold, and intestinal dysbiosis. After years of feeling stagnant in my condition I can now say, I feel well. Now, my goal is to take all that I have learned and help others move forward in their conditions towards energy, vitality and their optimal life.

Has it been a smooth road?
Many of my struggles have been as a patient of modern medicine. I went to specialist after specialist with my symptoms but I did not feel heard. I felt my doctors, well intentioned as they were, were attempting to my fit symptoms into a clinical model that did not exist in conventional practice. There was test after test with no helpful results and prescription after prescription with no change in symptoms – but no one stopped to ask why? What is the underlying cause? This is the frustration of so many patients with uncommon symptoms and no answers and after my experiences, I truly feel for everyone with this experience.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Rekha Shah MD PC – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I have been a practicing physician in the East Valley for greater than 30 years, with a board certification in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Functional Medicine certification from IFM. I am also certified in acupuncture, chelation therapy, acute homeopathy and have completed the Dr. Bredesen course in Alzheimer’s Disease and the ILADS in Lyme Disease. I have shifted much of my practice now towards Functional Medicine and I am proud that I can spend my time with patients designing care plans that can help prevent and treat chronic diseases. Specifically, I focus on autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, heavy metal toxicity, leaky gut syndrome, Lyme disease and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

I strongly believe this is the future of medicine, wherein, we build strong therapeutic relationships with patients use a system based approach to treat the whole person. My goal as a provider and what I truly feel, that we specialize in our practice, to listen to patients and empower them with tools and treatments to reach their optimal state of wellbeing.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
My family has lived in Tempe for years and there is so much to love about the East Valley. I raised two lovely children with my husband here and we have truly enjoyed the food and culture of our town. I must say, we do like that ASU is nearby for all the plays, lectures, seminars and other activities that a big university attracts.
