Today we’d like to introduce you to Regina Lord.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in northern Arizona and have live here most of my life. I am currently living in Tucson with my husband of 25 years and my two teenage sons. I have always been interested in art, spending a good deal of my childhood drawing and making things. I went to college at Northern Arizona University and became a registered nurse, working with women and children. Because of the stressful nature of hospital work, I became more and more interested in making art as a way to relieve stress. I eventually started a side business of selling art prints and other handmade items, slowly decreasing my hours at the hospital. Eventually, the pull towards my art business became so great, that I quit my nursing job and have been a full-time artist for the last 6 years. It is the best decision I have ever made. I work harder now, then ever before, but I love what I do and I love being my own boss.
Please tell us about your art.
I love to paint bright, bold, very colorful artwork. My medium of choice is acrylic paint, but I love mixing mediums, often using ink, colored pencil, artist crayons and oil pastels in my work as well. I am most inspired by my environment. The sunshine and colors of Tucson and the beautiful natural elements of the Sonoran Desert provide more inspiration than I could ever ask for. I often, incorporate cactus, flowers and birds into my art. I am more interested in bringing out the colors and beauty I see and adding my own magical and whimsical twist, I choose to always look for beauty, and goodness and strive to put that into my art. When people see my art, I hope that it uplifts them and brings them joy.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
For me, success was being able to quit my hospital job and do what I love every day. Art is not just something that I enjoy doing, it is something I have to do every day single day. It’s my passion. Being able to convey that passion and my love for beauty into art is what gives my life purpose, joy and fulfillment.
Qualities that are essential to being an artist – a very observant eye, openness for explorations and the willingness to try, try and try again. Also, creating art is such a personal expression of yourself that you have to be thick skinned. Not everyone is going to love what you do and that is absolutely okay, because there will be others who do.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I sell original art, prints, cards and other items on my online shop (www.shop.creativekismet.com), but you will find my latest creations, and process shots on Instagram. I have made a personal goal to post something new every day, even if it something small or something from my art journal. It keeps me productive and keeps my creative process flowing. I love sharing there and making connections with people who like my art. I also teach online art lesson, which can be found on my website. I love sharing what I do with other creatives who are interested in learning and trying something new.
Locally, you can find me at several upcoming Tucson artisan markets in the fall. I am also part of a cooperative art gallery in Tucson, Chris Bubany & Friends Gallery.
