Today we’d like to introduce you to Raquel Kahn.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Raquel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was a dancer throughout my childhood and all the way through college, but my rational brain told me that attempting to make a career out of dance was the wrong choice. So I studied Mechanical Engineering and began working jobs in both the energy and tech sectors. For years these jobs paid the bills but never really fired me up. Meanwhile, dance and fitness were basically my full-time hobbies and I took and taught dance and fitness classes on the side whenever possible.
In 2016 my fiance and I decided to leave Silicon Valley and start anew in Phoenix, which allowed me the opportunity to pursue a passion project: opening my very own dance fitness studio! And Fit 6-7-8 was born in January 2018.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Making a drastic career shift like that was not easy. I’ve had tremendous support from family and friends, but taking a leap from my very comfortable, well-paid engineering jobs to a career as a dance studio owner was terrifying. It still is terrifying everyday, but I’ve learned so much about my strengths and weaknesses when it comes to business, sales, accounting, customer service, and everything in between! Before starting the studio, I didn’t know many entrepreneurs, so I wasn’t totally sure where to start. But now I have the studio up and running, my membership base is growing, and I’m always looking for more opportunities to make it the best place it can be.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Fit 6-7-8 is a dance fitness studio where we specialize in classes that let you workout like a dancer. We really strive to create more than a gym, but a true community for women to find their inner and outer strength and radiate confidence. For us, it’s just as important for our members to have fun as it is for them to get a great workout. All of our classes combine upbeat music and dance-based movements for a group class experience that is fun and casual for women of any body type and experience level.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve been a dancer since I can remember, so it’s really no surprise I ended up where I am in the end! But in tiny tots dance class, I was always in the front row, following the teacher’s exact instructions and never getting distracted by my parents in the audience like most other three-year-olds. I was a rule follower through and through (and still am to this day).
Growing up my parents raised us with lots of travel and sense of adventure. I took my first plane ride before I was even a month old. I’ve always felt like the world was my oyster and everyone has something to teach me. I try to keep that open-mindedness with me all of the time.
