Meet Rani Sweis of AtticSalt in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rani Sweis.

Rani, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
There are right-brained people and left-brained people. I am 100 percent on the right side (pun intended). Full creative through and through, my mother taught me how to draw a teenage mutant ninja turtle when I was 3. Haven’t looked back since!

Just kidding, I looked back plenty actually. As a kid I was obsessed with drawing. I took all the art classes I possibly could all the way through high school and was on track to receive a college scholarship from Columbia. Then one day, I decided to give it all up.

At the time I didn’t know about branding, graphic design, or advertising so I thought there was zero money to be made in art. Becoming an actor was the second life goal on my bucket list. Yeah, not the best backup plan, but what could possibly beat getting paid to play pretend.

We moved out to Phoenix from Chicago. I signed with a talent agent and ended up booking roles on movies with Will Ferrel, Jamie Fox, and Rebecca Hall and filming national commercials with Oakley, AAA, and Massage Envy. I fell in love with the craft. I was smitten with the practice of character development; taking what little information that was in the script about my character and filling in the gaps in order to paint entire the picture.

Meanwhile, as a promise to my parents, I still went to college and I studied marketing. I never intended to actually have a career in it. I was just looking for the quickest path to get the degree to appease my parents, help my Dad with his businesses and then move to Hollywood.

Something crazy happened along the way. I took mandatory class called “Consumer Behavior.”

In these short months my worlds collided. I realized that brand development and character development were exactly the same thing but for companies instead of a person. My path had forever changed.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
They say that nothing worth having ever comes easy. The deck has been stacked against me ever since I was a pudgy little 5 year old with severe asthma and flat feet.

I could’ve given up when I was 14 years old, 250lbs and 48% body fat. I used to cry myself to sleep and pray that I wouldn’t wake up the next day because life was too hard. Fortunately, I kept waking up.

So, one day I finally made the decision that I was going to change my situation, even if it killed me. I believe that there will always be challenges and setbacks, especially as you start to gain more success. The only thing you can do is become better at overcoming them.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about AtticSalt – what should we know?
I’ve been the proud owner of AtticSalt for 4 years now. We are a branding agency that helps empower organizations through brand language and design.

Sure we design logos, but a brand is far greater than that. It’s that gut feeling that some has about a company, product or service. It’s what makes customers choose one company over another. It’s the bond that a person has with the company they work for. It’s the experience someone has with a service that makes them want to tell all their friends and willingly write about it on Yelp. It’s the ability to recognize a product simply by its color or its imagery.

Yeah, it’s pretty amazing stuff! I am truly privileged that I’m able to help companies create that, along side my extremely talented team, every single day. What we do has a tremendous effect on the success of our clients and we’re extremely proud of all the meticulous work and attention that goes into each project.
