Meet Rachel Carroll of The Neuromuscular Studio in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Carroll.

The Neuromuscular Studio was established in 2003 and began with Rachel treating performance injuries of musicians and dancers with therapeutic massage. In 2004 she began her advanced training toward Certification in Neuromuscular Therapy under world-renown NMT American Version founder, Judith DeLany and became Certified in 2006. Over the last decade, her practice has grown into a leading, specialized multi-therapist medical massage clinic that focuses on Neuromuscular Therapy for the treatment of soft tissue injuries, chronic pain, and post-surgical rehabilitation. She and her experienced team of therapists help people have less pain, more movement and a better life.

Her focus is working with area Top Docs in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine, Neurology, and Pain Management in patient care for complex pain cases, and specific post-surgery rehabilitation. Her team also focuses on treating athletic injuries, and those from car accidents, as well. She is passionate about helping patients have decreased pain without the use of opioids, for which Neuromuscular Therapy is a key component. The Neuromuscular Studio is an award-winning clinic, having won Best Massage in Phoenix Magazine and Arizona Foothills Magazine, and being named one of Phoenix’s Best Massage Therapists by Expertise.com. It serves clients from all over the Valley, as well as southern and central Arizona.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The 16-year journey has mostly been a smooth one, with organic growth by referral over time. The biggest challenge over the years has been growth without sacrificing integrity of service, and remaining a debt-free business. Because Neuromuscular Massage Therapy is a highly specialized form of massage, it has been difficult finding therapists who are trained and Certified in it. The training for Neuromuscular Therapy is a blend of medical knowledge, critical thought and practical application, and takes over two years to complete. Finding therapists who are committed to the process and passionate about the work has been an obstacle to growth.

One of my main goals has been to grow the business without incurring debt, and in turn, I’ve had to grow slower than originally planned. The financial health of the business has been important to me for our clients to continue to receive the services they need, and the therapists that I employ to have a livelihood doing what they love. Business instability ultimately affects culture and therapist-client relationships, so I make business decisions carefully under the guidance of that lens.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in treating the soft tissue aspects of chronic pain and injuries through Neuromuscular Therapy, which is a form of medical massage therapy. We are the leading Neuromuscular Therapy office in the Phoenix area and work in conjunction with physicians, surgeons and physical therapists from around the Valley in patient care. Our office is a collaborative working environment in which all clients are given a customized treatment plan with all therapists and therapies needed for optimum results.

What were you like growing up?
My parents will tell you that I was the “social director” or “event planner” in the family. I always had an agenda planned out and delegated tasks to others at family functions, even at an early age! Little did I know that was the future entrepreneur shining through.

Hard work was instilled at an early age.  I grew up on a farm in rural Northwest Ohio, and there I learned the importance of hard work, and how others rely on you doing your part to achieve a collective goal. I watched my father in harvest season work a regular full-time job, then come home and go right to the fields to harvest corn until the early hours, just to get the crops off before the next rain came. There was no rest for the weary when dollars and livelihood were at stake. I also watched my Mom work a full time job in nursing, then go back to school to obtain another degree, all while caring for us and managing a household.

In college I studied music performance in bassoon and became an orchestral musician. It was a lot of dedication and collaboration in a team environment to reach a common goal. It was there that I first experienced the power of therapeutic massage and the benefits of treating injuries. I developed severe tendonitis in my wrist and forearm as a result of the playing demands of my degree, and a massage therapist was the person who helped me have decreased pain and improved finger dexterity. It was then that I knew that I wanted to help others have less pain and a better quality of life, and began my studies in massage therapy after received my Bachelor’s degree. And the rest is history!
