Meet Racciah Pittman of Luxx Mynk in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Racciah Pittman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in a small town near Detroit, MI called Kalamazoo. As a child, I grew up in a home watching my mother do hair from our kitchen. Along with several of my other family members from both my mom and dad’s side of the family doing hair: Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and my Brother. I was always amazed and interested in whenever I would watch them all do hair. So I started doing my own hair in middle school at the age of 11 and had learned to do braids and microwave ponytails, pin-up styles from watching my mother do hair. As I got into high school, I started doing my friends and family hair. By the time I was a sophomore in high school I took an alternative course at West Michigan Barbering and Beauty School which gave me the opportunity to become a licensed cosmetologist.

But my story didn’t start there. I started off a nail Tech at West Michigan Barbering and Beauty School and finished the whole program and decided right before it was time to take my state boards that I didn’t want to become a nail technician. Nails was not my thing, hair was. So I spoke to the school administrator and told her that I wanted to do hair not nails. Throughout my four years of high school, I continued to take the cosmetology courses and do hair on the side for friends and family. My dream of a becoming a known hairstylist was soon crushed, when I became pregnant at the age of 17 my senior year and getting ready to graduate with a baby.

At that time I had to put cosmetology school on hold and focus on graduating high school while pregnant. Becoming a mother did not stop me. Years later I decided to go back to school and get my cosmetology license where I had then relocated to Phoenix, Arizona and enrolled into Paul Mitchell The School Phoenix. Where I finished the program and took my state boards and received my Cosmetology License. After working in a salon, I decided I wanted to branch off on my own and build a brand. That’s where Luxx Mynk came into play.

I started re-building my clientele after and had an idea of a one-stop shop, where clients can get their hair lashes and brows done all in one place… So I added eyebrows and lashes to my list of services. And me being so determined to build my brand, I soon launched my very own wig line that’s called Luxx Mynk Hair and Wig Collection. That I put my blood, sweat, and tears into, I am a Black-owned business that is self-funded that I worked very hard to brand.

Has it been a smooth road?
Racciah’s life now is a far cry from where her life was only a few short years ago when she started having health, personal and financial issues, all while dealing with the adversities of going through such a rough time in her life her ambition to become a better woman and mother kicked in. Not one to just throw the towel in at first sight of trouble, Racciah decided to use her passion for the beauty industry that started as a teen in middle school, with a family background full of beauticians/cosmetologist; and used it as a catalyst that would eventually turn her life around in ways that she never imagined. A “BOSS” in every sense of the word, Racciah went from struggling to a self-made woman as a single black mother, accomplishing the impossible.

I specialize in a multitude of services including hair: offering an extensive range of hair services: natural hair care, hair extensions, hair clip-ins, wigs, infusion/micro links, silk press, razor/pixie cuts, dread/faux locs services, hair coloring services, braiding and mens’ toupe’ (lace closure installs), makeup, waxing and eyelash extensions. With advanced services intertwined with an unmatchable and unique style, our pampering one-stop salon is the place to be when in the Valley of the Sun.

Luxx Mynk is a Black Owned luxury Wigs and Lashes Salon. I sell over six different wave patterns along with three different grades of Wigs. Common wave patterns are Silky straight, Body wave, Deep wave, Water wave, Kinky straight, Kinky curly, Loose wave. All the wave patterns are separated into four different categories, Brazilian, Peruvian, Malaysian and Cambodian. The Wigs ranges from 8′- 40’.

I personally specialize in Full sew-ins, Closure sew-ins, and Frontal sew-ins, Silk Press, Hair coloring. Because I love what I do, their all my favorite. What I am most proud of as a company is that I started off as a vision and a dream that became a reality in the heart of Arizona, Luxx Mynk the Brand.

Yes, I believe that Tempe/Chandler area is evolving with new business opening and new building structures coming, there is always room for more business-like mines. There’s room for everyone.
