Today we’d like to introduce you to Quinn Tempest.
Quinn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up thinking I was going to be an actress. I got my degree in Theatre Arts and even studied for a time in London at an acting academy. But I realized pretty quickly that I wasn’t very interested in the highs-and-lows of being a struggling actress and turned to marketing instead, finding that it suited my personality and communications background.
I worked for a few years in L.A. in the event marketing industry – everything from staffing large-scale experiential marketing campaigns to managing poker tournaments at the Playboy Mansion. Needless to say, it was a very interesting job, but one that caused me to burnout. So I left L.A. looking to start over and landed back in my hometown of Phoenix.
During my soul-searching, I took a year-long yoga teacher training course, all the while honing my design skills in order to launch my own business. I rediscovered how important balance and health was to me, and solopreneurship seemed like the perfect professional path to complement my personal journey. I have run my own business since 2011, became rooted and involved in the Downtown Phoenix community (car-free for 4 years – woo woo!), and have traveled around the country teaching businesses on the art and strategy behind effective digital marketing.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course not! What journey is smooth? In the past, I’ve I struggled with finding boundaries between my personal and professional life, pushing so far past them to a point of utter exhaustion. But I’ve learned my lesson, and that experience is the sole reason I can claim to be a successful solopreneur for the past 7+ years.
Please tell us about Quinn Tempest.
I am a graphic designer and digital marketing strategist. I work with small businesses and entrepreneurs to bring their brands to life online through a combination of creative marketing and strategic design. So that means my days are always different, but usually involve a bit of web design, content creation, logo design, and digital strategy. My work is extremely collaborative and strategic, so my clients often find my approach more unique than just working with a designer who makes ‘pretty pictures.’
I also travel around the country as a speaker, presenting on a range of marketing and entrepreneurship topics at conferences and events. I’ve been told I’m pretty good at breaking down complex topics into understandable (and dare I say fun!) lessons. So that’s my superpower, along with demystifying the often-confusing digital marketing world and helping people truly understand how to take advantage of all the tools and strategies at their fingertips.
What I feel most proud of in my business is being able to help empower people to start or grow their own business. Nothing gets me more excited than being the person who helps bring someone’s idea to life, and watching them fully step into their potential – not just professionally, but personally too.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I can truthfully say nothing. I’m so content with where my path has led me, and I know that all the struggles or missteps led me to where I am now. Past disappointments may be hard to swallow in the moment, but if you look at failures and mistakes as life lessons in disguise, you will grow your capacity to handle them and see them for the growth opportunities they are. That’s my mindset, and it has served me well.
