Meet Carrie Marill of punkwasp in Downtown Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Marill.

Carrie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my business as an artist after graduate school in 2004. Since that time, I have continued to make work and share how I see the world thru color and pattern.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a busy head down keep going kind of journey, there have been speed bumps and sharp turns – but I haven’t let them throw me off course. I love what I do, it is my life – it’s who I am. I can’t wait to get to my studio each morning and figure out the puzzle of art and how I can make something that makes your brain feel good.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about punkwasp – what should we know?
I make fine art paintings, sculpture, prints and drawings. I also create indoor and outdoor murals and have recently started my own accessories line of beaded jewelry and textiles. My brand punkwasp is an umbrella for all the nuanced and not so nuanced ways in which, I see the world and how I want to share it. I think that I am typically known for my paintings, color and pattern work. I’m proud that I am able to follow my curious ideosyncratic brain and do what I love for a living. Ultimately, I love “making space” creating a moment in a room or on a building or on a person that gives your mind, body and soul a little “deep breath moment” – can you tell I’m a bit of a hippy?

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband, Matthew Moore has been my biggest cheerleader and supporter since graduate school. He has always had my back and giving me honest intelligent feedback when I needed it most. Lisa Sette deserves major props because she saw something in me early on when I first moved here and believed in me – I am forever grateful to her and the peeps at Lisa Sette Gallery for all their hard work. The community of Phoenix – the tribe of strong independent creative women, the museum curators and the artists that live here have been nurturing and supportive – I love learning and rediscovering new parts of this desert city.
