Meet Paulina Ramos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paulina Ramos.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in El Paso Texas but raised in a very small town in Mexico called Delicias where studying art was impossible.

I always wanted to learn about the history of art and the techniques that many artists used.

During childhood, I tried to imitate the techniques of the artists who drew my favorite cartoons. After learning how to draw cartoons, I tried to figure out how to draw the objects that were in front of me. I drew or painted any object as if it was something real.

I started art school when I moved to Scottsdale, AZ six years ago, and I recently graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts where I finally defined my kind of art genre.

Tim Conte, who was my figure painting professor and my mentor, taught me how to use a limited palette, to use proportions for a human figure, and how to control value and contrast with oil painting. After this training experience I learned drawing and painting from live and working with traditional techniques are what defined me as an artist just like the old masters. Apart from traditional painting and drawing, sometimes I express my own ideas using symbolism with human portraits and figures. I like adding symbolism such as intense colors, astronomy or calligraphy, to wake different feelings to the viewer. I also got a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, so in some of my works I present the psychology through symbolism but painting in a traditional way. I usually represent the joy of making art with symbolism. I like being an innovator in this kind of way.

Please tell us about your art.
I have worked with different genres like photography, digital painting, and ceramics but what I love the most is painting with oils.

I always had a great interest in realistic portraiture, but I always believed that is very challenging. In order to imitate life, I had to practice a lot using traditional techniques, and became easier to paint a portrait that I was trying to imitate as a real portrait later.

I like to have a unique style so for some of my artworks I add symbolism making them look more dreamland.

Overall, the importance of traditional techniques and the joy of making art is what represents me as artist.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Modern society believes that being an artist is a challenge and not worth it. Many people have asked me questions like “why do you study art? Or “Why is art important?” and I still remember when I was in High School many students did not work during art class because they believed art class was break time.

Well, the answer is too general, but I always share my most important points of view. Art helps us know what the differences within cultures are because art was highly used to represent different cultural histories. Also, art makes us think critically which improves our lives in many ways, such as drawing the human body for designing clothes, drawing the anatomy of the human skeleton for studying medicine, drawing the facade for a new church or painting a dramatic landscape for the cover book of a classical novel.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I would like to share my works in process with other people who are interested in art. I am always working with new projects.

People can see my works through my Instagram account where I also announce if I have any exhibitions going on.

People can also support me just by loving and appreciating my artwork and art in general. It makes me so happy to see more people admiring art like me.
