Meet Paul and Nitisha Walker of Walker Art Moments in Ahwatukee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul and Nitisha Walker.

Paul and Nitisha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We’ve always been interested in working as creatives. For many years, many things always seemed to win our attention. Finally, we decided to stop letting things get in the way. Nitisha began publishing poems and writing children’s books. Later, we worked together to produce original oil paintings. We painted whatever moved us. And we hand-painted the illustrations of her first published book. Nitisha eventually found an affinity for doing florals. I found much satisfaction in figure painting. We began to market and sell our work on Etsy. After the first painting sold, we quickly realized that we would never see that painting again, except for in the old add. It was one of our favorites. Right away, we contacted printing companies, to sell prints of our work, and so that our paintings could decorate the walls of our home for just a little while longer. Regardless of the printing service we contacted, we hit the same roadblock. Our cellphone could not produce a digital image of high enough quality for a high-resolution reproduction. So, we bought our first DSLR camera. And of course, we had to get educated in operating the DSLR. That’s where the fondness for photography ignited. Now, Walker Art Moments creates original oil paintings, photography service, and fully illustrated children’s books. We also have two blogs and a YouTube channel under different names.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. Can anybody say that? The biggest struggle along the way for us was financial. Wage reduction, job changes, relocation and other financial hardships made it difficult for us to obtain materials and equipment needed to build a creative business. To overcome these challenges we accepted corporate jobs that paid well but left us nearly depleted of time and mental space to be creative. Now, we’ve found a happy medium. Nitisha was able to quit her company and focus more on our endeavors. That has worked out for us very well, case in point, you found us. We hope the momentum continues.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Walker Art Moments are a couple of creators. We create oil paintings, photography, children’s books, financial literacy books, blogs, and YouTube content. We are most known for our art and photography. I believe there is one quality that sets us apart. We’ve been married for over twenty years, we’ve known each other since the age of ten. We graduated from the same elementary, middle, and high school. We grew up two streets from each other. And we attend the same religious meetings with our families growing up, and we still share that spiritual connection. So, when we create, we create together, and the deep love we have shown in our work.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was into sports. Nitisha was into music and dance. She was an avid reader. We both enjoyed the art classes presented to the public schools we attended. We were in Detroit at the time and the economic crisis stunted the extracurricular activities in many of the public schools. On top of that, our parents chose our schools based on their safety rating rather than their academic aptitude. So, our artistic education was self-funded, later in life. Nitisha was always fun-loving and joyful. So, was I. Our parents did a great job in making us feel as though everyone lived in “the hood”.
