Meet Patrick Ortman of SalesFirst Recruiting in Arcadia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Ortman.

Founders Patrick and Adam met many years ago as salesmen for a major national telecom company and both quickly distinguished themselves as top producers and were fast-tracked into leadership roles. As people leaders, one of the biggest challenges both Patrick and Adam faced was finding and attracting top sales talent for their sales teams – This challenge was the seed for SalesFirst Recruiting. In 2012, Adam joined with friends Chris Shablak and Ed Beaulieu, founders of West Coast Careers, and established a recruiting office in Portland, OR.

In 2016, Patrick and Adam were reunited and came up with the idea of a recruiting agency that focuses exclusively on sales roles and they planted the first SalesFirst Recruiting office in Phoenix Arizona. In 2017 West Coast Careers Oregon rebranded and became SalesFirst Recruiting Oregon. Later in 2017, Dan Morris, brother of Adam Morris, opened the third SalesFirst Recruiting location in Denver Colorado.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been no handouts along the way, SalesFirst Recruiting is completely self-funded and is a true ground-up effort. We have been confronted with the common challenges that most real entrepreneurs face, and have struggled every inch of the way as we approached profitability.

SalesFirst Recruiting – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
SalesFirst Recruiting excels because we focus only on what we know – Sales and Marketing. We have no desire to be everything to everybody, we just want to be excellent in the area of sales recruiting. Our recruiters were all sales and market professionals prior to becoming sales recruiters and as such, they are able to connect with their peers and counsel them on how to maximize their career in was that normal recruiters cannot duplicate – It takes one to know one…

What I am most proud of is our team – we believe that if you want to create an amazing team, you need to hire Amazing people, and frankly, we have the “amazingest”! Our people and our process goes far beyond surface screening and creates real trusted advisor relationships that extend far beyond the candidate’s date of hire. We literally change people’s lives each and every day.

For example, when we help a college grad who may have thousands of dollars of school-related debt find a career position making more money than they ever thought possible, the feeling is amazing! Trust me, that candidate will remember their recruiter for a very long time.

Do you feel like our city is a good place for businesses like yours? If someone was just starting out, would you recommend them starting out here? If not, what can our city do to improve?
Phoenix is hot! The job market has rebounded in a big way and we are seeing investment in our local economy from out of state companies – which is causing a surge in hiring that we have not seen since pre-2007. Now more than ever recruiters prove their worth by helping clients find the right talent for their open roles.
