Today we’d like to introduce you to Paloma Kruse.
Hi Paloma, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve loved photography as a hobby for as long as I can remember. I was always the friend that would stage photoshoots in silly costumes with a bedsheet hung from the ceiling as a backdrop! In my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to intern for my photography teacher, who was a professional photographer with her own business, and helping her with her work made me fall deeper in love with the art form. From there, I did small jobs here and there throughout college, but the thought hadn’t crossed my mind to make a career out of it until I had my daughter two years ago. I was (and still am) a stay-at-home mom, and around her first birthday, I decided to do some family portraits of friends for fun and get myself out of the house! From there, I did more and more families and transitioned into weddings as well, and in the 12 months since then have photographed over 100 families, couples, and weddings!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This journey of starting my own business has not always been easy. I’m pretty business savvy, but the list of “to-dos” to make a business legit is long and tedious. Thankfully, the internet and some friends with more legal knowledge than myself helped me to get everything sorted! Besides that, having a little one while growing a business has been a challenge we are navigating. Leaving my one-year-old with my husband at first so that I could work made me feel like a bad mom. I would think that I wasn’t a real photographer, we didn’t need the money I was making, and I was selfish to take time away from my family for this. Eventually, my business took off, and I realized that not only was the money I made making a difference for my family. But having something that I was proud of, which was mine, and mine alone made me a better mom because I felt good about myself.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in couples and weddings, as well as family portraits. My work is known for capturing my clients’ elegance, details, and natural and comfortable posing! My editing style is true to color with a warmth that adds a timelessness that is sometimes missed in trendier editing styles. I want my clients and their families to look back at their photos and see themselves, the moment, and the feeling without being distracted by a dated-looking style.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check?
I’ve enjoyed watching the YouTube videos put out by John Branch Photography. When I started photographing weddings, I found that he had an answer to every question that I had, which was incredibly helpful!
