Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige Nelson.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up always doodling, I would see a poster, picture, movie, or children’s book that would inspire me to create something and that’s how I have always been. Throughout elementary and high school, I never pursued my art, I even took an art class, which I loved, my freshman year and I didn’t take any more art classes until college. Once I got to college, I finally discovered that I was passionate about creating, I took a graphic design class at Dixie State University and loved it, and as I pursued graphic design, I enjoyed and loved the digital look, but I became frustrated because I wanted to draw what I was picturing instead of using a mouse. I then started to take more art classes and realized that was what I was good at, the combination of graphics and drawing. When I married my husband, I moved back to Arizona, and my schooling got cut short, I felt such a void in my life without being at school with creativity and inspiring people, and it took me a while to find my way back. I recently have found an energized and inspired place in myself because of my art, and it has become really empowering and something that I will continue to do for the rest of my life.
Please tell us about your art.
To create my artwork, I am currently using an iPad with the app Procreate, I am able to draw digitally which is perfect for me. I also love to draw on paper with pencils and colored pencils. Lastly, I like to use Adobe products like illustrator to add text or other graphics to my work. I love to create a scene from some of my favorite stories. It usually is from a fairy-tale or a random scene from my head. I love children’s book illustrations, and that’s what I would describe my work to be most like, a scene from a fairy-tale or children’s book. I hope that people feel excited about my art and wonder what the rest of the story might be.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I think that in certain ways it has become easier and other ways it has become harder to be an artist. In the world we live in today, it is so much easier to find other artists and to put yourself out there with social media, there is a bigger community of artists from all over the world because of the connections we have through the internet. I do think it is also harder because of the high volume of artists. It is much more challenging to get noticed. I believe the role of being an artist has changed because of social media, and certain events around the state, country, and internationally really affect me as an artist, I feel like it is important to keep up with pop culture, politics, etc. to gather more of a following, and to stay connected with other artists.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am mostly using social media to showcase my work, through my Instagram. I also recently started to sell art prints on society6 as well. In the future, I would love to go to craft fairs or other markets to show and sell my work.
