Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige Crawford Blyth.
Hi Paige, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I pursued sports nutrition as a career starting in college at Texas Tech in 2008. Although it was rare for a Registered Dietitian to work in sports at that time, I knew it was the path I wanted to take. I completed my undergraduate schooling, dietetic internship, and master’s degree while seizing every opportunity I came across in sports nutrition. I gained experience working with pioneers in the field of sports dietitian at colleges and organizations including The University of Texas and Auburn University. From 2014-2020, I grew as a dietitian at EXOS, working at their previous Carlsbad, CA location and their headquarters here in Phoenix, gaining invaluable experience working with amazing athletes, professional teams, and partners. I then spent five years working in the NFL as a sports dietitian for the Los Angeles Chargers, an incredible opportunity to support world-class athletes and build a thriving nutrition program on a large scale. Throughout my career, I have followed action sports and picked up a few as hobbies (snowboarding, wakeboarding, dirt biking). I realized that sports nutrition resources for these athletes have not been as well-developed or accessible as they are in traditional sports, even though these athletes push their bodies to extremes to regularly perform mind-blowing athletic feats. All of these experiences, combined with my personal passions, led me to create Freestyle Nutrition Co., a sports nutrition company tailored specifically for action sports athletes.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t call the journey smooth, but I’m grateful for every twist and turn because they all contribute to where I am today and provide motivation for where I’m trying to go with Freestyle Nutrition Co. I believe every transition comes with some struggle. Starting Freestyle Nutrition Co. has forced me to think outside the box and gain skills in areas where I have no prior experience, such as developing a brand presence and building a website suitable for my vision.
I’ve never been anything close to a salesperson so marketing my company is a challenge, but I love the creative side of developing the vision and supporting resources. Specifically, social media is very daunting to me, which has put some self-inflicted pressure on myself in order to gain exposure in my niche community. I’m so lucky to have a supportive and talented husband who happens to be a software engineer. He set me up to start vibe coding, which has empowered me to build a website and some interactive tools for my target population, although I would have definitely hit some major roadblocks without his help.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Freestyle Nutrition Co.?
Freestyle Nutrition Co. offers sports dietitian services, content, and tools specifically designed for action sport athletes, including those in motocross, supercross, enduro, rally, supermoto, snowboarding, climbing, skateboarding, and surfing. I work with athletes individually, provide nutrition services for teams, and offer resources and tools to help these athletes optimize their nutrition for performance and health.
The tools I’ve developed and plan to build are valuable for athletes and practitioners alike, and they also allow me to efficiently provide in-depth nutrition support when working with individuals or teams. I call these tools “Tune-Ups,” as they are nutrition strategy-based and can be used like equipment tune-ups in the action sports world to optimize performance. I am most proud of these tools because developing them has pushed me far outside my comfort zone, translating my ideas into usable software. Currently, I have a Moto Energy Tune-up and a Moto Hydration Tune-up, both designed to improve a rider’s energy intake and hydration status. I have several more sport-specific tune-ups planned for the future.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The sports nutrition industry has seen tremendous growth over the past 15 years, yet progress within the action sports community has been significantly slower. Many elite action sports athletes may never have worked with a dietitian in their entire careers. I would love to see this change over the next 5-10 years. Sports dietitians can help these athletes properly fuel their bodies for extreme conditions and aid in recovery from the demands of their sport and from injuries, which is a significant concern in all action sports. Freestyle Nutrition Co. is set out to champion this effort.
Pricing:
- Freestyle Flow (our blog) and the Tune-Ups (nutrition apps) are free.
