Today we’d like to introduce you to Nolan Roberts.
Hi Nolan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am Nolan Roberts. I’m 38 years old and owner-operator of Grindstone General Contracting LLC. I was born and raised in Arizona. I grew up in Chandler. I graduated from Chandler High School in 2002, where I reside. Like most young adults, I had little idea what I wanted to do after high school. I always had a knack for repairing things, and I had brief stints in Automotive, Electrical, and HVAC. In 2015 my father-in-law (a general contractor) saw a way for me to hone all my talents in one field, and we started working together. In December 2018, I got my contractor’s license and began Grindstone General contracting with my business partner and best friend, David Snyder. Focusing on kitchens and bathrooms, we hit the throttle in 2019, trying to offer the best quality work for fair pricing. Now we average anywhere from 5-10 remodels at once throughout the valley, doing complete home remodeling, additions, and guest homes.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Uniquely we started the business self-performing all trades, and when we would take on a new job, we would do everything from the Demolition, plumbing, electrical, and tile setting. As the business grew with word of mouth, self-performing limited our exposure. For instance, if I was installing kitchen cabinets for a week and then tiling for another week, we could only take on one client at a time. It’s not necessarily bad, butt in a microwave society, people may not want to wait 6 months to start their master bath remodel. After that realization, we were able to gather quality subcontractors and focus on more of the management side of remodeling. More exposure increased word of mouth, and it is still the most vital sales tactic we have going for us. Remodeling, by nature, has its struggles. Unforeseen changes due to material lead times, permitting delays, or previous work that doesn’t meet current code requirements can add to our daily struggles. We use those occurrences as an opportunity to learn and adapt as a company and individually as professionals.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We service the valley offering quality remodeling at fair pricing. One of our greatest strengths is that we have swung the hammer ourselves, and we understand the detail required for a successful project. The order of how trades move in and out of a project is so important, and at times, if we need to move along said project, we have and will break out the saw to install a backsplash or baseboard, for example. This willingness to invest our labor and intense attention to detail make it easier on our trades and clients’ timelines. The collection of Architects and designers that trust us with turning their visions into a reality is paramount to our success.
As the years pass, it’s gratifying to be a part of someone’s story. Whether it’s the couple saving for a new kitchen for over a decade or the entrepreneur opening their first business, we realize that we can’t take the amount of trust required in our business relationships for granted. Our brand is us as individuals. As business owners, we estimate and manage the project from start to finish. With great pride, we serve our community and intend to do so for decades to come.
What matters most to you?
As a Father, husband, Son, and friend, I try my best to be the best version of myself that I can be daily, No matter the external distractions. What matters to me the most in life is the health and happiness of my family. My wife Emily and I will be married for 9 years this fall. We have a wonderful son that is somehow 9 already. As I get older, I realize what an absolute thief time is, and it’s the most precious form of currency.
