Today we’d like to introduce you to NIZ G
Hi Niz, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey! My name is NIZ. I’m a stencil artist based in Austin, TX, originally from Lima, Peru. I specialize in magical photorealism and am inspired by the cosmos and nature, among other things.
I started drawing and painting as a kid. My Mom was a classically trained painter in Peru, and she taught me some basics early on; besides that, I’m self-taught. I started playing around with spray paint and stencils as a young skateboarder while living in Boca Raton, FL, and moved to larger pieces on walls when painting with graffiti artists in Austin, TX. My pieces evolved, getting bigger and more complex.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Art is different from the path you choose if you want a smooth road, lol-specially not murals and public art. With public art, the artist has to maintain some level of responsibility to the community and integrity. One of the hardest things for me are moments when my truths as a human and as an artist are at odds with the public or with agents(like corporations or the city or government) that define what will or will not be allowed public art. There are many paths an artist can take as a muralist. I chose the path of the storyteller and the truth seeker. Part of this path involves challenging moments where I decide to do what I feel is suitable as an artist (who honors creative freedom and responsibility to amplify hard truths) instead of what is easy, lucrative, and crowd-pleasing. One of the most complex parts of that is being disliked and demonetized. One of the most rewarding parts of that is the freedom that comes with speaking from the heart.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work ebbs and flows with the cycles of life. Technically, I am a muralist specializing in large-scale, conscious-driven stencil art. I’m known for organic backgrounds and crisp, vibrant photorealistic stencil art. I am most proud of the pieces that speak to deep-seated issues facing the collective unconscious-weather, in the form of a rejected Mother archetype or forgotten Indigenous communities. Bringing unspoken issues to light probably sets me apart from most street artists: that and my dedication to radical honesty and self-expression in the public visual domain.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
My favorite thing about Austin is, hands down, the creative pulse that drives this city. It manifests in lush landscapes, intentional communities, and a vibrant art and music scene. What I like least is the unchecked commercial and corporate growth that threatens this creative drive.
