Today we’d like to introduce you to Nilda Pizarro-Rodriguez.
Hi Nilda, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. Before we ask about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I just got licensed as a real estate agent in June of this year, but I went to real estate school for the first time over 20 years ago in Puerto Rico, where I’m from. At the time, I worked full-time at a call center during the day, went to college in the evenings, and did real estate school once a week in the evenings. I may have overextended myself just a bit, haha! So when it came time to take my real estate exam, I didn’t pass it by just a couple of points, and I said I would take it again and never did. I ended up getting married and having kids, and I never thought about seriously trying it again. At the beginning of this year, after being a stay-at-home mom for 14 years, I finally decided to go for it again because real estate has always been my passion and hobby. Having 3 kids, 2 of whom are still in school and require drop-offs and pick-ups, going to school in person didn’t fit my schedule, so I decided to take the course online at home at my own pace. I loved the flexibility of it and being able to study, whether it was at 9 a.m. while the kids were in school or 9 p.m. after they were in bed. In May, I finished the course and passed the school and state exams, and then in June, I joined My Home Group as my brokerage. Beginning my career in real estate is everything I thought it would be, and most days, it doesn’t even feel like work. Don’t get me wrong, it is a lot of work and effort, but it is what I’ve always wanted to do, and I know that not many people get to say that they love their work, so I consider myself blessed.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As I mentioned, there was a 20-year gap between my first try at this career and the point where I’m finally doing it, so it hasn’t been a bump-free road. Once you’re licensed, the struggles are different. You finally have your license; now what? Real estate is a lot of referrals and word of mouth, so when you’re first starting, you’ve never sold a home before and, therefore, don’t have any clients; so getting your first clients and gaining traction from there, I would say is the biggest hurdle any real estate agent will face and probably why a lot of people don’t make it in this business because if you don’t have another income or a spouse/significant other that can support you while you get to the point of actually making money, it can be a huge challenge and very discouraging.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Realtor working with residential buyers and sellers throughout the Phoenix Valley. In this business, you must put your client’s needs and wants first and, above all else, even if that means less commission. I love providing that feeling to my clients to let them know that it really is about them, that I am here to serve them to the best of my abilities, and that I will always act in their best interest. I am also fully bilingual, as I am from Puerto Rico, so for those clients who feel more comfortable communicating in Spanish, I can help them.
Before we go, can you talk to us about how people can work, collaborate, or support you?
In this day and age of social media, especially for real estate agents who are just starting, having a good social media presence and following is huge and can make a big difference in your business and how you can reach potential clients if you have a friend or family member that has their own business, whether it’s real estate or anything else, follow their social media accounts and like and share their posts as much as you can or feel comfortable with. The best way to support a real estate agent is honestly through referrals. Tell your friends, acquaintances, and family members if you’ve had a great experience with your Realtor. It’s the best compliment we can receive.
