Meet Nikki Turner of Crowned Hair Studio in Chandler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Turner.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nikki. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was always fascinated with doing hair from the age of nine. I would practice the latest styles on myself from Shirley Temple curls to Finger Waves. At the age of twelve, I decided that I wanted to dive full fledge into the braid world. Because Both sides of family were heavily involved in the cosmetology industry, I was able to spend the summer learning different techniques and experimenting with various clients.

At that point, my mother, sisters, aunt’s and friends became my guinea pigs, which allowed me to cultivate my braiding and styling skills. I then went to Cosmetology School and obtained my license in 2005. At the age of 22, I went into partnership with my cousin establishing a salon boutique for three years. I now embark on having my own salon again, along with establishing various businesses in the area of the performing arts.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing ever worth it comes completely easily. I endured a foreclosure during the time of establishing my business. From an unplanned pregnancy to the lost of family and business relationships, a divorce and heart-wrenching family traumas, I had to rely on an entity bigger than myself to pull me through such turmoil. However, I am a fighter and with every bump and bruise, I was reminded about the bigger picture. As I continue to evolve, I grow wiser in my decision making while I search for clarity about the next steps needed to be a successful Entrepreneur.

Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about your work?
My Company Crowned Hair Studio is an LLC specializing in braids and braid styles. I am in independent contractor within a For tees Salon & Spa. Although I am known for braiding, I am an expressive artist at heart. I too am known for my dancing. Whether I am teaching, taking classes or performing, I am a true artist in the realm of self-expression. I am most proud of not quitting. I am most proud of not giving up on myself regardless of the setbacks, I continue to try.

Even if that means me literally grabbing my own leg to move myself forward, I will do what it takes to find my creative voice. My skill set is what sets me apart. I cannot be boxed in because I am a lover of the arts in many capacity to performing dances of various genera’s, writing poetry or theatre productions, sewing for fashion shows, planning events, or braiding hair. I have many outlets to express myself. I do not take my gifts lightly and I continue to sharpen these skills in order to share my heart. Although I have a great deal of raw emotion, polishing my skills

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My future plans are to establish a salon by next May, create a podcast that explores the various ways one could live holistically and well through the arts and self-expression.
