Meet Nigel Hirschi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nigel Hirschi.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in northern Utah. I was an only child raised by a single mom. I wasn’t an artist growing up. I didn’t start drawing/painting until my early 20s. I spent my teen years doing drugs/skipping school/going to shows. When I turned 18 my friends and I started hanging around the only tattoo shop in my home town “Sailor Jim’s electric tattoo”. Luckily most of the dudes that worked there were not only good tattooers but good humans as well. After spending some time/money in the shop they asked me if I’d come on as the front guy/piercer. I quickly realized that piercing was not for me but I absolutely fell in love with tattooing. With the help of the some of the guys at the shop I started learning how to draw and paint tattoo related stuff.

Please tell us about your art.
My main focus is on tattooing. Tattooing is its own thing. There’s nothing really like it. It’s so personal so I try to put as much good energy into it as I can. I’m just trying to make an interesting and long-lasting product. Something that people are jazzed to wear around until they die. I paint a decent amount but a lot of that is to improve the tattooing and to kill time.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
With tattooing it’s easy. There are shops everywhere, conventions, events and so on. For other mediums it can be a lot more difficult. I think people should make their own action. Start throwing your own art shows or art nights. Don’t be afraid to flop because at the end of the day who cares. None of this matter. Just tell people “hey I’ve got some weed and beer. Come over and let’s make some shit!” For the most part artist want to show off what they’ve been working on/get better at what they are doing. So, it’s really not that hard to get people to come out you just got to put in the effort.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
