Meet Nicole and James Dougherty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole and James Dougherty.

Nicole and James, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Where to begin? I could say it started at Birth. I grew up with an amazing mother who loved to go shopping. I am originally from the suburbs of Chicago, so it was easy to head into the city to go shopping and buy the latest trends. I would say that is where the obsession with fashion started. Fast forward to 2011, I was working in the corporate world of sales & marketing. I always loved working with people but felt like I was missing something. I really had a drive to work for myself, that I actually started with a mobile spray tanning business. I did it for almost a year, while working full-time. I saved what I made from my new business adventure, gained a customer base, so I knew I was on track to grow this business.

At this time, I had a niche finding unique pieces and reselling them. I put my two passions together, quit my 1st career, and opened my first boutique Simply Posh in 2012. Simply Posh was a higher-end ladies consignment boutique that offered spray tanning. Together, I made the two passions work! If someone was coming in for a spray tan, more or likely they were going on vacation or an event and needed a new outfit(s). So, it worked. Within six months of opening, I added a section of new ladies boutique and called it Posh. By the end of 2015, my store was half consignment, half new boutique clothing and spray tanning.

Then in Mid- 2016, I received an opportunity to expand the Posh Boutique side of things at The Shops at Norterra, which is located in North Phoenix. That is when Posh Boutique became Posh North Boutique due to the location. Just like Simply Posh, our following clicked and took off at The Shops at Norterra. The more I focused and grew Posh North, I realized I was falling out of my passion of the consignment. By the end of 2017, I decided to re-vamp my first location to Posh Boutique, My goal was to finish my time there as my lease was ending and that shopping center changed, and just focus on Norterra.

Well, another opportunity came knocking. It was a short-term “Pop-Up” at Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall. With the closing of the first location, it seemed the right time to open a location in Scottsdale. Mid 2018, I closed my very first location and added a second location at the mall. After we fulfilled our term at the mall, we accomplished our goal of establishing ourselves in Scottsdale. From there we found our permanent location at The Shops Gainey Village that opened Mid May 2019! Today, Posh North & Posh Boutique Scottsdale are still going strong at both locations.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, the last 7.5 years have been smooth sailing. With every business comes some hardship, but nothing major. Just your typical everyday challenges, finding employees who genuinely care and general customer service related bumps. One of the biggest challenge I had to do this year, was to relocate our Posh North location just two doors down. Making sure our clientele knew we relocated was a challenge in itself. Now being in our new location for almost a year, it has finally settled in.

I am also lucky to have a very supportive husband, James Dougherty. He is amazing coming up with creative designs of the stores and handling any behind the scene emergencies. In addition, we have three red four legged kids that require a lot of attention- A 13 year old Doxie, a five year old Vizsla and three year old Redbone Coonhound. We are busy with Posh and family but couldn’t manage life without any of it.

Please tell us about your business.
Posh is a small, locally owned boutique that boasts a friendly ambiance and features contemporary women’s clothing, accessories, and gifts. Our focus is to always deliver the best customer service, while building amazing relationships with our clientele. We offer a mix of quality, well known brands, in addition to unique lines that keep bringing people back to posh. Posh style is always changing, growing and embracing new trends that meet the needs of our clientele. Posh is a place where you can find unique, trendy clothing at an amazing price.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our proudest moment that we are walking into our 8th year of business. Besides, being open for almost eight years, Posh has won a few awards. We have won AZ Foothills Best of Our Valley for Best Local Boutique 2019 and now 2020 Posh Boutique Scottsdale won The Scottsdale Progress Newspaper Best of Scottsdale 2019. These are all voters based, so I know the hard work is paying off. Of course, we are the most proud of all of the continued support and loyalty our customers have given us to have made it 7.5 years! We are always looking to grow and to do our best! Posh wouldn’t be where it is today without the love of our amazing customers, family, and friends!
