Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Davy.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Phoenix native, I am a sculptor who works in metal casting, woodcarving, and oil painting. I just completed my bachelor’s degree in art from ASU. I work full time as the mold maker for Bollinger Atelier, and tattoo with an exceptional and talented group of artists at Sefo Ink Tattoo in Glendale.
I began my artistic career as a tattooer, I wanted to expand my knowledge of art and began my education at Glendale Community College. I found that working and experimenting in two dimensional and three-dimensional work was where I really found passion and am continuing to try to grow and find amazing and talented people to work around and grow within the valley. I am a first generation American, the mother of two sons, a daughter, granddaughter, and a sister. My work is whispers and secrets of truths in my life.
Please tell us about your art.
For my sculpture, I work with raw wood and carve it by hand with basic tools to create forms and also have really begun to focus on cast metal work. By using bronze and iron, mostly in large scale, I utilize lost wax casting methods. I find the work to be fulfilling and its extremely traditional and an arduous process. My sculpture is an evolving body of work that is currently about the display of internal vulnerability. I am fascinated with the impact of emotions and how it transforms a figure into something new. I am attempting to discover and correlate organic growth in nature with the internal emotional growth within myself. My inspiration begins with my personal struggles, loss, and love, it’s honest and uncomfortable for me to say aloud. I want the work to be the things I cannot say out loud.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I like the available options for artists today. The world is big and there seem to be so many roads we can take to discover what we want to do to grow. I think that living as an artist, in general, is one of consistent hard work, but it is so very satisfying to love what you do every day. I am blessed to be a working artist, and I believe it’s possible for anyone to do if they want it enough. I would love to see more support from the city to invite new artists to participate in large-scale public projects. I am a big believer in an opportunity to show the ability that can be beneficial for both artists and a community. I also think the valley only benefits in having art in it, art should belong to everyone and be everywhere in the public communities.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Currently, I am creating a body of work to hopefully be showing in the near future. I have no idea where next, but I update my website and my Instagram with info often of upcoming events I participate in. Give me a follow and I will let you know where the road leads to next as soon as I do.
