Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicky Mayers.
Nicky, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been a lover of fashion for as long as I can remember. I grew up dressing my dolls with my grandmother’s vintage hats, jewelry and making them clothes from fabric scraps. I have also never been without a new outfit. I was the little girl in the neighborhood who was always dressed in a new dress. While growing up, I participated in church plays, modeling, dancing,.. I quickly realized that I preferred designing and making clothes, the behind the scenes stuff more than being up-front and center. By the age of 12, I attended my first sewing class and learn the fundamentals of taking measurements, making flat patterns and garment construction.
Over the years, I perfected by “dressmaker” craft that is typical of my country, I am a native a Panama where cross-stitching and knitting is an integral part of the countries national costume, “La Pollera”.
I enjoyed being the girl with the outfit no-one had. For the most part as an adult, sewing enabled me to alter and adjust my clothing to find the perfect fit when I purchased off the rack garments. It never occurred to me that I will become a designer, I just wanted to sew.
Fast forward 25-yrs and all the sewing lessons later, I found my passion for designing and creating wedding dresses. I am a lover of all shades of pink and I have never met a bow or ruffle that I didn’t covet!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When you do what you love it’s never a struggle.
However, living in Arizona a state not known for fashion shape my business model and re-enforce my notion that each dress is a limited edition. Sourcing fabric locally is not a luxury, therefore, my off-the-rack model guarantees that no Nidelka bride will wear the same dress.
Your Wedding Affair – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Your Wedding Affair was created over 10 years to help brides design and plan their big day; I leverage my sewings skills and started designing and creating bridesmaids dresses to offer an alternative to the lovely satin dresses bridesmaids were forced to wear.
Today, Nidelka is the namesake of the main bridal collection. Unlike traditional bridal salon, the Your Wedding Affair studio offers brides two options, Ready-to-Wear and Made-to-Measure the Bespoken collection. Fit means everything to us, therefore, our designed measurements follow a standard size chart, our mini-collections are comprised of 2 or 3 dresses. We are most proud to offer brides a made-to-measure finish product.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I like to believe that I am leading the change in the wedding industry by offering a made-to-measure wedding dress. My success is simple regardless of where a bride purchases her dress; if she chooses a made-to-measure designer, it’s a win.
