Meet Nick Reynoso

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Reynoso.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
As a child I always enjoyed art, but I never took it very seriously. My family moved when I was entering high school, which caused me to lose any inspiration to produce anything artistic. It also didn’t help that I had an art teacher who obviously did not care about educating his students. I joined the automotive industry and suddenly found my love and passion for arts again through car paint jobs with candies and metal flakes. Not long after, my close friend who taught me to paint cars passed away so I decided to get my first tattoo to honor his memory. After getting my first tattoo it was all I could think about, so I spent the next year and a half researching different styles of tattooing, as well as continuing to collect tattoos from Tony Olvera.

I spent so much time trying to prove how serious I was about making a career out of tattooing that he finally agreed to mentor me. I completed a two-year apprenticeship, where I learned the basics of tattooing as well as how to keep a clean and sterile tattoo shop. Also, within that time, I did my best to take any art classes I could find and attended demonstrations from artist that I looked up to – trying to gain any knowledge that I possibly could.

The transition from automotive to tattooing was difficult, but I am glad that I put in the time and hard work in order to be in the position I am now in my career. I have been tattooing for five years now, but I am always trying to expand my knowledge by trying new techniques to grow my craft in not only tattooing, but drawing and painting as well.

Please tell us about your art.
I produce all types of artwork. The main type of artwork I do is tattoo. I tattoo all different styles, but my personal focus has been on black and grey realism, such as portraits, flowers, and animals. Despite having an interest in black and grey realism, I do still enjoy doing all forms of tattoos, whether it is big or small, realism, traditional, letting, or color.
Other than tattooing I really enjoy working with charcoal for my drawings, and oil paints for my paintings. I am able to pull inspiration from everything, whether it is a photo that I took of a rose, an ornate architectural piece that I saw or even different pieces from the custom car scene, as well as religious artwork. I am also deeply inspired by the friends I have made within the industry that continue to push themselves to be better. I am always searching to learn more, and to try out different machines and equipment. I am very open to working on new ideas, and am constantly looking forward to the next piece I am going to do.

We often hear from artist that being an artist can be lonely.
I wouldn’t say it is lonely but it does consume a lot of your personal time. The best piece of advice I could ever give is to surround yourself with like minded people and artist. It may be difficult to find, but by going to places like the museum, draw/paint nights, or art and tattoo expos you are able to surround yourself by other artist who may have the same goals or interests as you. People tend to live relatively busy lives, but I am sure they would be more than willing to help you better yourself as an artist if you reach out.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work can be found throughout the valley. My most updated work will be featured on my Instagram @tatt2_nick – which showcases the tattoos and artwork I have produced. I also try and am involved in any art show I am asked to be a part of. I actually do an annual art show called Lowtography – which is a mixture of Lowrider photography and art. You can support me by following my Instagram, as well as telling your friends and family about my artwork, and me and where I am currently working.
