Meet Nia Starz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nia Starz.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nia. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I started writing poetry at a young age. I wrote things about my negative experiences as a preteen. In 2014, I took a stab at writing music after linking up with Yahpasion and seeing the path he was on with his music. The first four songs I ever wrote were recorded shortly after, and I ended up performing them at Pride and Club Red that year. My numbers went crazy on Reverbnation, and things were popping.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been an easy road. My car was stolen twice when I first started out. Luckily, I had friends and family that supported me. I was working two jobs to pay bills after my ex, and I broke up. I couldn’t afford to go to the studio as often as I liked, but I made the most of my sessions whenever I did go. Ultimately, those struggles helped fuel my passion and made me go harder at that time.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I like to make heavy-bass influenced songs. I love bass, I love vibration. I think it’s therapeutic, but I love to just make music. Rap music is what I relate with and fuels me. I like to provide a goofy, deep, and passionate perspective and sound.

I also like to take pictures, and I love to enjoy the scenery. I just started doing abstract paintings and have been getting a lot of good feedback. I’m also a theater geek and love to act, critique, and analyze movies and characters. I’m an art fan. Anything that has to do with self-expression I support and love.

Is there a specific memory from when you were younger that you really miss?
My favorite memory from childhood was celebrating holidays with my family. I would get a phone call from one of my sisters telling me to be ready.

All morning I would clean with my mom and blast music so that I can be ready to be picked up. I remember listening to how do you want it by Tupac, weak by SWV, hits by ice cube and boyz two men. It really takes me back.
