Today, we’d like to introduce you to Newt Grover.
Hi Newt, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a glass artist and owner of the studio Newt Glass in Scottsdale, Arizona. We specialize in crafting hand-blown glass chandeliers and custom glass art. My career as an artist started because I was obsessed with fire and art. I wanted to find something that merged those two things.
My mother called me a well-directed pyromaniac. I started in Jewelry with small little torches, then moved to neon sign art. I liked Neon because it had a scientific process to it, but I got out of that industry because I became bored with just making neon signs. I am always looking for new challenges, and Neon Art stopped giving me a creative challenge. I found my true artistic. Passion late in my career. I had not done blown glass until I was 40.
I saw a show on Chihuly Glass, and I became obsessed with wanting to learn glass art. I told my wife I had to do this so I changed my art career again. Glass art is only limited by my imagination and technical skill. I get to come up with crazy ideas, pitch them to clients, and make money off my wild ideas. It is the perfect medium for creativity while having a large client base to grow your business.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Creating a successful career as an artist is never a smooth road. It takes a lot of work to create art that people like, and it takes even more work to market and make it something people will buy.
Every transition I have made from Jewelry to neon to glass required me to learn new skills and market my business differently. It wasn’t always easy, but the challenges of changing my art style and learning how to market my art as a business made me a stronger and smarter person.
Thanks. What else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in glass chandeliers, large wall and plate displays, and metal and glass sculptures.
I put “the cherry on top,” the” wow factor,” or the finishing touch of the project. I am known as one of the few glass artists in the Valley who will commission large custom glass pieces, and everything I do is custom work made specifically for the client.
What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
No, the challenges of being a successful artist have always been the same.
Finding an artistic medium that emotionally fulfills you while also making you money has always been a challenge, and it will always be. There is a lot of discussion about AI in the art community right now, but it is not something I really think about since glass is a very physical medium, and I am at the later stages of my art career.
