Meet Nancy Grahlmann of By George Originals in Fountain Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Grahlmann.

Nancy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am the owner of By George Originals. The company name is taken from my maiden name, George. I have owned BGO for close to 20 years.

I mostly worked freelance as a writer/cartoonist so, that I could be flexible about where I resided. Freelance work also gave me the flexibility to raise my four children and be active in their young lives. Coming to Arizona became my eleventh location and I think I am enjoying my life here so much that I may make it my permanent residence.

By George Originals is now my home based studio where I do glass fusing and encaustic painting. I also give workshops and group parties for anyone wanting to learn glass fusing, encaustic painting and metal smithing.

My glass work can be seen in the Artists Gallery located in Fountain Hills on the Avenue of the fountains.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles were accepting assignments and then learning that my spouse (a ladder climbing executive) was being transferred to a new location. When we moved to Atlanta, GA, I unpacked my drawing pad, pens and pencils before I unpacked any of the house as I was working at deadline for a project that was near publication.

By George Originals – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business has evolved. I am an artist. I have my hands in projects all of the time. I am always proud to see someone create something in one of my workshops and watch them as they see their final results. They are often awestricken and excited.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was being juried in at the Artists Gallery.
