Today we’d like to introduce you to Mya Brooks.
Mya, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to Phoenix almost five years ago in search of my brother. I sold all that I had and what couldn’t be sold was given away. I desired to find him, save him and assist him with rebuilding his life. My mini memoir entitled… And deliver Us From Evil chronicles this journey. As well as details my involvement with the religious cult that robbed me of my brother, my family and almost cost me my life. I experienced a triumphant release, my brother, however, is still lost. I know someday he will be recovered. There were several unfortunate incidents that I’ve experienced since my relocation to the valley including; getting sick unto death and enduring several months of recovering and combating mental illness as a result of trauma. My life’s experiences have allowed me to walk away equipped with profound stories and lessons in resiliency, hope, unconditional love and faith. My desire is to inspire others through motivational speaking, future literary works and creating arts programs to assist trauma survivors. I’m proof that in spite of how devastating the storms of life can be, you can rise again triumphantly.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been an easy road. I’ve had to combat anxiety and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and acute depression. Having some honest conversations in therapy and the love and support of my mother (Linda Myrick) and best friend (Katrina Dillon) helped me through some really tough times.
Please tell us about your work.
My book,… And Deliver Us From Evil can be purchased anywhere books are sold. I’m a motivational speaker who specializes in youth and adult empowerment, mental illness awareness and creative arts. What sets me apart is my use of spoken word poetry, dance and theatrical presentations to tell profound stories.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is laying in bed with my mother listening to her read fairytales and poetry. I believe she’s the reason I love poetry and the arts today.
