Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Zamboni.
Hi Morgan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
About seven years ago, I rediscovered my interest in photography while working at a drugstore. I was immediately drawn to working in the 1-hour photo department, so I asked myself why I’d never tried to pursue this interest as a career before. I put together a portfolio of work I’d done as a hobbyist and started sending out resumes.
One of the positions I applied for was as a photo editor at an online clothing company. By an incredible stroke of luck, I was offered the job and I threw myself into it. Any downtime I had I spent looking up tutorials, lectures, and tips on taking and editing fashion photos. A few years later the photographer position opened up and, though I had zero experience taking fashion photos or directing models, I was offered the position and threw myself into that as well.
I am completely self-taught and a big believer in always learning, always improving, and always trying something new! These days, I am working on my BA and connecting with local models, stylists, and make-up artists for non-work personal projects. I’m pushing myself to submit to magazines and get my work published in print, which is completely new to me!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Though I have been exceptionally lucky, it hasn’t always been easy. I have had so many moments of self-doubt, and imposter syndrome is a constant specter in my professional life. There is no simple solution; the best thing I can do is keep pushing through it.
Am I perfect? No. Can I improve? Of course. But does that negate how much I’ve already improved? Absolutely not. I got myself here, and I choose to trust in that, even when I don’t quite believe it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I photograph fashion and products for a living and help local models build their portfolios with more creative portraits in my spare time.
Growing my career in product photography helped me prioritize clean and consistent photography, and I bring these priorities to my side work as well. Having this basis allows me to let loose a little and get creative while still producing high-quality images.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
It’s cliché, but true: just do it! You’ll never be 100% ready to try something new, and that’s exactly what makes it so valuable.
I was not ready to be a professional photo editor, but I just did it. I was not ready to be a professional fashion photographer, but I said yes to the opportunity. I learned to trust myself to figure it out, and I’m learning to forgive myself for the inevitable mistakes.
I wasted so much time worrying about not being good enough to do the things I want to do, but the truth is you will never be good enough until after you start doing it. So do it!
