Meet Monique Bribiescas of MoballinTraining in Chandler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Bribiescas.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Monique. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Basketball has always been my passion, from a young girl at the age of 6. I was inspired by my father and aunt who introduced me to the game I love the most. I was never the biggest or the strongest player, but I always had heart, and determination to always be the best when I was on the court. My motivation came from a teacher who told me I was too small to play division one basketball. I went home crying to my dad because I actually believed her. I doubted myself, I thought maybe I am too small, shes never seen me play, but maybe I don’t have what it takes because I am too little. My father told me to use what she said as motivation and prove all those who doubt me wrong. So, that is exactly what I did. I worked hard, I practice every day, and by the time I got to H.S., I made Varsity as a Freshman.

As a Freshman, I took my team to a state championship with the Dobson Mustangs and was the leading scorer that game as well. As the success continued transferring schools my Jr year, by the time I was a senior at Desert Vista Hs (Phx) I was one of the top players in the state, I broke an Arizona State record with 770 assists. My senior year, I took my team to another State Championship but fell short, Regardless of the outcome, I was named 2004 Player of the year, and I committed to New Mexico State University on a full-ride basketball scholarship. The perseverance and worth ethic that I’ve always had still helped me continue my success to hep me as I got to college. I started as a Freshmen and helped lead my team to 3 consecutive Western Athletic Conference Championship appearances.

Upon graduation, I wanted to continue to be apart of the game and wanted to give back my knowledge and my experiences to the youth. Which led me to coach. I coached at Mountain View High School and then at McClintock High School for a five-year span. I liked the coaching part but realized that player development during practice was what I loved the most. I started training a few high school girls and then a few became many. I came up with Moballin Training and developed a business out of it. I now work with young kids all the way up to professional athletes. I work with college and high school teams throughout the valley as well. I also run many camps and women and youth leagues as well, I’ve run camps with the SheHoopsNetwork which is the number one social media outlet for women’s basketball. This summer I went on tour and took Moballin Training to Alaska, Miami, Florida, Las Vegas, and New Mexico. As I continue to grow my business, I hope one day, it can be worldwide.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle that I’ve had to deal with being a basketball trainer is always having to prove myself because I am a female teaching the game. Majority of trainers are male trainers, so I have had to really show people that just because I am a female, I can be the best at what I do too regardless of gender. There are times where people don’t take me seriously, they see a pretty face and can be really unprofessional. I’ve had to question them and let them know if I was male would you be saying these comments. I am trying to break the barrier for these young girls. What ever you want to be in life you can do it, just work hard, and find your passion.

Another challenge that I run into is I have two full-time jobs. I am in education and have been the last 10 years. I work Monday – Sunday taking no days off. My work days are normally 14 hours a day every day during the week. I teach during the day and then train all evenings. On weekends, I am training all day as well. There are so many days I am exhausted, but I fight through it for my players. I want them to be successful, so I don’t have time to take days off.

Please tell us about MoballinTraining.
Moballin Training is a basketball skill training business where we work on the fundamentals, player development and knowledge of the game. I help my players develop their skill in all aspect of the game. Shooting, ball handling, and footwork are what I specialize in. Demonstrating discipline, teamwork, communication, and leadership that can help them on and off the court. What I am most proud of is I am facilitating and empowering our community and I am helping to increase our youth access to sports. Providing our youth with the foundational benefits of basketball. What sets me apart from others is that not only Moballin Training is just for training we provide Women’s leagues, girls youth leagues, adult pickups, and exposure camps. All my other trainers are professional basketball players and I have successful coaches that bring years of experiences.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory as a child would be playing AAU basketball and traveling all over the U.S while playing in National Tournaments in front of College coaches.
