Meet Monica Brown of Memories By Monica in Tucson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Brown.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been fascinated by photography since the age of 11, I saw a beautiful sunset over the mountains and right then and there, I decided that I wanted to capture that beauty through photography.

I saved my money for months and purchased a little point and shoot, but was very disappointed when the camera did not capture the image I saw in front of me or the image in my head. Throughout the years, I realized it was an art… one that I could control, but didn’t know how.

Through lives twist and turns ups and downs and different career choices, I always came back to photography as my true love and I finally achieved my goals and made photography my full-time job, and created my business five years ago.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, I find the business side of it quite difficult, however, the creative end of it is what I absolutely love and what keeps me going.

There is a lot of competition in the photography industry, prices range drastically. The talent out there is astounding, so although this can be a roadblock, I choose to see it as a challenge. It helps me to work harder to be better, not better than the next photographer, but better than I was six months or a year ago.
I challenge myself, to capture images that are timeless, that I love, and that clients will cherish for years to come.

Memories By Monica – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I come from a large family, my husband and I hired a professional photographer for our wedding. So, did one of my siblings. and we absolutely love our images from that day.

However, my other siblings hired amateurs or friends with “good” cameras, and they, to this day, really regret their decision. They didn’t have a lot of money and chose to spend it on other things for their weddings.

I decided that I was going to be affordable, to everyone.
I would work with clients and their budget while still offering quality work.
I specialize in weddings, couples photography, engagements, and family photography.
I prefer natural light and being outdoors.
I am most proud of the bond I make with my clients. I’ve never had a client complain or be unhappy and they usually come back through the years for more sessions.

I know I’m not the most talented photographer or the most experienced, but I love to capture people at their happiest. I love to immortalize the smile that the groom gave his bride. Or the tear that runs down a brides cheek as she says I do. Or that little toddler running around the park for the first time during his family session… those are all things that no one can ever take from you, and although with time and age our minds may forget, the picture reminds us of it and takes us right back to that moment.

I think part of what sets me apart for wedding photography is that I focus on the moment, and capturing the essence of your day not on the editing.
I always have several conversations with the bride before her big day, and in those conversations, she tells me what “look” she prefers, what she finds
beautiful and would like her images to look like. For each bride it’s different. So I’ve gone from light and airy, to dark and moody, to somewhere in between.
In my opinion, anybody can edit, but not everybody can capture the moment.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’d say the images I captured in Horseshoe Bend.

Like most people, I second guess myself and I have in the past compared myself to others and their amazing work. That mentality can lead to disappointment and loss of motivation.

But when I took those images, and the response I got from them, I realized that I can do anything!
It really is mind over matter. A question of putting my mind to it and working hard.

When we do that in any aspect of our lives, we can really blow ourselves away with what we’re capable of.
