Today we’d like to introduce you to Miyah Cloutier.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, for starters, haha, crazy story. My great aunt Vera passed away when my son was about 2 and as a single mother, you’re not just aware of the elite barbers. I got tired of the search, went to Walmart and said “I’ll do it myself !” Lol, long story short I knew absolutely NOTHING of a haircut. I gave the worst Mr. T look alike Mohawk, just all bad. Never touched my son’s hair again. We found hats until I was able to find a quality barber in Minnesota. Fast forward to 2017 I read a status “I want a female barber like La” and in 2018 I decided to take the career serious.
I enrolled for like a month got shut down by a certain person and thought my “career” was over. I re-enrolled January 2019 and finished successfully. I since then worked for an elite barbershop in Minnesota and was able to cut my first professional athlete (Timberwolves) my first 6 months of my career huge deal. And I was the First Lady barber to open that door out there.
7-8 months later, I was able to open my own studio, the vibe did not work at that shop. Can you imagine 1 woman and 15 male egos? It was time to branch off. Then covid -19 happened. I had the studio for 3-4 months before it was shut down. I felt like wow just my luck and money…At that point, I weighed options and ended up moving to Arizona. Worked at about 4 shops trying to find my way and finally was able to open my own studio in Tempe. Then check this out, after you think you planted your feet, I was 6 months in and we all were hit with an eviction notice and had only 2 weeks to scurry and find what’s next. If adversity had a face to it I would be right beside it. I now have been a professional barber for 2 years. 3 years total in cutting. I own a barber studio in Tempe Arizona again…
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not a smooth road at all. I stopped school twice before actually graduating barber school. Then the struggle of working with so many men trying to be just as good. Been called out of my name and told by plenty men they will never let a girl cut their hair…I moved to Arizona and my “friend” of 10 years left me alone to figure out the scene. It took 6 months of struggle before I opened up. I’m a single mother of 2 zero family here or support can you imagine the constant battle of wanting to give it all up. Just a few…
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
