Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitra Kamali.
Hi Mitra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born with a gift for art. When I was only three years old, I started to draw. As I grew up, I also loved math and science. I went to college and became a petroleum engineer.
But my passion for art never left me. I wanted to combine my two worlds. So, I used my engineering background to create something new.
I invented the Fusion Art Technique. This method uses heat to melt polyester powder onto a surface. It creates a smooth finish that looks just like shiny enamel. Now, my art and my science are completely joined together.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I faced obstacles as a woman in the engineering field and found even more challenges in the art world, but my creativity always came to my rescue. One challenge I will never forget is surviving a life-and-death illness. I am always grateful for the results of that survival because my medical MRI scans sparked a powerful new idea. The glowing, colorful imagery of my brain scan inspired me to create my signature art series, called Human Connection: Go Beyond Skin Color, which uses vibrant, luminous figures to show a world free from prejudice.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Making connection with ALL.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Stand your own ground.
Never give up!
