Meet Mishy Katz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mishy Katz.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
For me, creativity is kind of an obsession I have always loved making art and music, I can still feel the excitement of getting a sketchbook and “Drawing All Animals” as a gift at about age 10 and loved my piano lessons Mom and Dad had me in from about age 6. When I had to choose a path to follow in college I chose to pursue an art degree, which turned out to be Ceramics, my current profession, and supplemented my studies with extracurricular dance and music classes by choice. During my college years, I was also making music in my life, which has been a constant as long as I can remember. I played in rock bands and eventually created a ‘casual’ band to entertain at weddings and business parties. I had a goal to learn songwriting, which I had been dreaming of for many years and finally took the steps to learn in 2015 and am currently writing performing, and recording my original songs. In my clay-work, I take on commissions to create pieces for decor or functional use, some go on to become family heirlooms, which is a very rewarding feeling for me! I run a very busy pottery studio that features musical events and has many talented artists who call it home. I teach pottery skills and technique, maintain a studio for artists to come create and am always looking for new ideas to share with my fellow creatives. I enjoy taking workshops and classes in both art and music and will probably never stop seeking new inspiration and knowledge in both these creative pursuits.

Please tell us about your art.
My personal artwork is woven with references to the natural world, to music and the inner spirit, and is created with hopes to brighten our lives by exposing the beauty and passion infused in our days and the everyday work of getting through life. I create functional beautiful pottery for families to pass down generations. I create pieces of pottery and clay-art that become eye-candy, decor to feast upon and spark energy or untapped realizations of possibilities, perhaps not ‘useful’ in the traditional sense but relied upon and comforting in their own way. I enjoy crafting small sculptures of musically related subject matter, miniature reminders that can brighten corners or desks, musical notes, ukulele or guitars, treble clef imagery. I write songs about art and I make art about music, both are infused into one another inseparably and continue to inspire one another in my spirit. My songs often refer to creativity and art and have a theme of inspiration, a positive attitude, and compelling stories. I continue to be passionate about making clay and musical creations and sharing them with anyone who happens to notice!

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I think in these times art and music are extremely important for people to express their feelings and challenges in a healthy, productive way. Communication and sharing of the human experience is core to our growing and evolving. The role of artists to me, remains simple and consistent, to express themselves as best they can and share what they consider important and vital. I think with social media and the internet, we have an easier time finding our audience and honing in on those who will benefit the most from what we have to share. Issues locally, nationally and worldwide tend to affect me mostly in my compulsion to make MORE art and MORE music and share as much as I possibly can, while the opportunities are there.
