Meet Mischa Jemionek of OPEX North Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mischa Jemionek.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I worked as an Athletic Trainer in the Sports Medicine Department at Villanova University, Temple University, and Princeton University for a number of years. I worked with the Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams. My job as an Athletic Trainer includes evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, and management of all injuries and illnesses of the team. Over the I noticed the huge gap between when I would discharge the athlete from rehabilitation into the traditional strength and conditioning model.

Princeton University provided a platform for me to continue my education and explore the relationship between rehabilitation and functional training. I was able to get my athletes better, faster by incorporating these principles into their rehabilitation.

After 12 years, the travel schedule began to wear on me and I looked to build a business that would allow me to bring this service outside of the collegiate setting. With a few partners, I opened my first gym, as a CrossFit Affiliate in Plymouth Meeting, PA. I found OPEX as I was struggling to figure out how to blend a personalized approach with a group training model. I soon realized that this was not the model that worked with my vision, so when I was asked to purchase the OPEX on-site facility in Scottsdale, I jumped at the chance.

This move has allowed me to build this vision. I have surrounded myself with a team that has more knowledge, experience, and gained the most results in the fitness industry. My team at OPEX North Scottsdale currently works with all types of clients to reach their health and fitness goals. We look at ALL aspects of our clients, lifestyle, schedule, history, nutrition, and goals to build a program that fits their needs. Onsite, we blend the best aspect of personal training and group fitness to allow ALL clients to succeed.

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not. Working in the Sports Medicine Department did not exactly prepare me to be an entrepreneur. It has definitely been a learning process. I will be the first to admit I am not a “business person”. It has been a lot of learning by doing. Buying out partners, selling one business to buy a new one, and moving across the country by myself to pursue my vision.

I have gone through three business partners, including one that was supposed to travel to Scottsdale with me to run the “business” side. He decided not to leave the East Coast, which left me to wear both hats as an owner AND operator.

This has definitely been a learning process!
