Today we’d like to introduce you to Mirna Pineda.
Mirna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
One of my best life investments has been to immigrate to this country. Nevertheless, that decision has involved a wide range of financial, physical, spiritual and emotional impacts. To immigrate is a big challenge. You are leaving behind family and friendly ties, although it must be clear that one’s roots are neither cut nor forgotten. Immigrating legally is even a bigger challenge.
There are so few spaces to obtain an immigrant visa, and it is becoming more and more complicated to do so. When my husband and I decided to expand professional horizons for ourselves and for the well-being of our daughters, we spent time, money and lots of energy to achieve it. We were able to immigrate legally. I have been a journalist for 35 years, I have worked in radio and television as a reporter and news host, and I write articles for the press and social networks.
I am also a teacher: I have a Master’s Degree in Education, a Master’s Degree in Business and I have recently become a Certified Life Coach. My passion is to teach. I take advantage of the media and social networks to provide content that seeks to improve the quality of life for people. I give seminars, conferences, and workshops to share practical tools which lead to paradigm shifts, and better yet, to habitual changes.
Combining both professions, I have developed educational programs that contribute to the personal development of the community. When we immigrated, we did it by means of a business visa. My husband was asked to open a business in this country parallel to the one he already had in Mexico. Back then, I only came as a companion, and if I wanted to work, I needed to seek an opportunity and apply for a work visa.
I knocked on doors of the two Spanish television stations in the Phoenix area. I had the enormous blessing that the Telemundo doors opened for me. They took advantage of my media experience in Mexico and processed an o-1 visa, which is a very selective type of visa. It is only awarded to people who demonstrate extraordinary skills such as athletes, artists, and Nobel prizes!
To my surprise, those of us who work in front of the cameras are “talent,” and that gave me the great opportunity to work on what I’m passionate about. Since then, I have collaborated in other media outlets, and I have also started my own company: AVANTE SEMINARS to promote training in human development.
I have published three books: 7 SOLES is a novel about human trafficking and immigration; IDEAS PARA SEGUIR AVANTE is a series of stories and anecdotes from personal growth and THE CHALLENGE OF CHANGING YOUR LIFE is based on a 3-day seminar with the same name.
I take every opportunity to share ideas of transformation because I am convinced that limitations are basically in the minds of people, so it is necessary to review their inventory of beliefs to make changes that contribute to their BELIEF AND CREATION OF THE SUCCESS that we all deserve.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many challenges. However, everything has been worth the effort and stress. For me, the language has been my main challenge. Although I studied English in Mexico, speaking it with agility still costs me work.
A different case is my husband, who went to a bilingual school since first grade. Language was not a big challenge for my daughters since they arrived here very young. They are both completely bilingual and bicultural. Professionally, the situation has been favorable for me, not denying that there have been difficult times; times of illness, and of financial complications, but the overall balance is favorable. There have really been many more blessings that I have received.
The United States is my home. It is the country where we decided to live, where in spite of some unfavorable situations, we live in tranquility, and we can always raise the quality of our lives. Many times I have been asked why I have not returned to Mexico, because most immigrant people miss their families back home and the land that saw them being born.
We have a great fortune that my husband’s family also immigrated, and my own family back in Mexico has the means to travel, enter and leave when they desire. We sometimes travel to Mexico on vacation, but we prefer the security that is lived in this country.
We feel very fortunate and blessed by the wonderful opportunities we have had in the past and keep having as a family. That is the reason we practice community service. It is a way to give back some of what we have received. Every obstacle has been an opportunity to test our talent.
CREER Y CREAR EXITO and AVANTE SEMINARS – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Experience makes a difference. However, I think that the most valuable thing is to have a good reputation and a good reputation is earned with effort and dedication; dedication and passion for what I do. That’s what I think puts me apart from others. It does not mean that I have to be perfect, but it means that I have learned from mistakes and that I seek to improve.
My passion is to share tools so that people can travel through life with more security, instead of being carried away by their fears. As a Life Coach, my job is to accompany them in the process so that they reach their goals. In my radio program, I develop a theme, as if I were giving a workshop.
In that way, I share valuable information so that the public can participate with comments online. I seek to close the circle of communication and empathy. I teach workshops in schools, community centers, organizations, businesses, religious centers and any space in media and social networks.
The workshops are mainly in Leadership, Communication, School for Parents and Mothers, as well as everything related to the development of life skills in the framework of universal values.
During the past 12 years, I have focused on the empowerment of women, men, children, young people, and small businesses. I feel very satisfied with the impact of my service to the Hispanic community. My commitment is to serve from my experience, my reputation, and my passion.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
I can not change the past. What I can do is change the ideas that have limited me, and bring them to action. What I want to change today, is to be able to feel comfortable speaking in public in both Spanish and English.
The only thing I can change is what I do from here on forward.
