Meet Miriam Hahn of YouCare-SelfCare in Arcadia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miriam Hahn.

Miriam, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been health-focused but about ten years ago, I attended a vegan cooking class that totally changed my life. I used to have sinus issues and headaches and those completely went away when I removed dairy from my diet. Additionally, I lost weight, had incredible energy, started sleeping better and overall just felt great overall. My husband and three girls quickly adapted the changes, making the transition very easy. I decided that I wanted to learn more, so I got certified as a health coach and then earned a Plant-Based eating certification from Cornell University. I love helping people to use food as medicine to improve their lives.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The only struggle really is dealing with criticism from people who are not educated on the benefits of Plant-Based eating. Most people think that you need animal protein to thrive and that simply is not true. Dr. Collin Campbell’s twenty-year research study called the China Study is one of the many research studies that are evidence-based and proves that most chronic diseases are linked to consuming animal products. Eating a plant-based diet has been shown to reverse heart disease, our number one killer, and no other way of eating can do this.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
For those living in the Phoenix area, I provide plant-based cooking classes, as well as two 12-week wellness programs. These programs focus on lifestyle habits in the areas of food, exercise, sleep, stress and environmental toxins. I teach people how to bring more health into their life and how to cook differently. We do this in a group setting, meeting once a week. I also offer this program in a two-day intensive weekend format to accommodate those from out of town or who work during the week. Soon the program will be available in an online course format. The program is ideal for anyone wanting to feel better and improve their health. Much like taking piano lessons would improve your piano playing skill-the skill, in this case, is improving your health.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moments of my career so far is when people embrace lifestyle changes during my 12-week program and they get positive blood work results and are taken off medication by their doctor!
