Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy Hunt.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was around 11 years old, I joined a swim club in my hometown of Hutchinson, MN. I fell absolutely in love with the sport and swam competitively for ten more years. Being in the water was just something that I grew to really enjoy. If you ask my mom, she’d tell you all about how I was terrified of the water when I was 4 years old. I was that kiddo that had to be pried from my parents’ arms. It was the swim club, peers and my Coach who helped change my perspective of the water. There were countless practices and swim meets that challenged me to level up and become better.
When I was in high school, I started a job working at the front desk at a local health club. I absolutely was inspired by the owner, trainers and fitness instructors. I would go on to work at all different gyms from Bally’s Total Fitness to Lifetime Fitness.
Once I became a mom, the gym schedule just wasn’t what I could handle at the time. For me, the hours were not conducive to being a single mom. So, I went into the daily grind of retail. I was good at customer service but just was not fulfilled. I was missing something but I wasn’t sure what that was.
I ended up stumbling upon Foss Swim School back in Minnesota. This was exactly what I was looking for! I always had a dream of being a swim coach and here was my shot. I stayed with Foss for four years before relocating here in Arizona. I worked with Hubbard Family Swim School in Phoenix and Peoria for three years before I knew I wanted to move onto the next challenge. (I do, however, still teach private swim lessons in the Summer!)
That was when I found Rock Star Boot Camp. A friend asked me to get the Groupon and check it out. I was really nervous to get back into fitness. At the time, I had another child and the pregnancy with him had been a challenge. I gained a lot of weight and was absolutely miserable in my skin. I was this 210lb body of sadness and insecurities. But I was determined to get back to the athlete I once was… physically and mentally. I had no idea how much RSBC would change my life. I met some of the most amazing people in my journey at RSBC.
It was a very interesting journey of darkness and light but I fought hard and eventually ended up becoming a trainer with Rock Star Boot Camp. I found a new passion in helping people challenge themselves physically and get out of their heads the way I had done. During my time at Rock Star, I was educated and certified 4 times in the TRX Suspension/RIP Training System by one of my mentors, Brandon Wagner. He believed in me so much and that pushed me to strive for more every day. Brandon is the kind of Coach I wanted to be like. Fun, engaging, passionate, creative, challenging, kind and most of all… humble. We are personal friends to this day!
On my 40th birthday, my Rock Star family gifted me with the opportunity to get certified in the Steel Mace at the Onnit Academy in Austin, Texas. I was blown away. They believed in me this much?! I loved the education so much that I went back a second time to get certified in Kettlebells as well. I stayed with RSBC for three years before I was ready to level up again. I was very unsure about leaving this amazing community that had become my family but I knew I had to move forward to the next chapter.
That is when I found TruFusion in Scottsdale, where I currently teach group fitness classes. I have learned so much more about myself in the few months I have been at TruFusion and fallen in even deeper love with helping people connect mind and body.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. When I first started my own training at RSBC, I was disgusted with myself. How had I allowed my body to this stage? How had I let my mind and thoughts get so incredibly low too?
For the first months, I would come home from the workouts in tears. My hips, knees, and ankles were always hurting. I was so discouraged watching these amazing athletes do things that I couldn’t do anymore. I was just going through the motions of getting up every morning to workout at 5:30 am. I wasn’t connecting my mental state to my physical body. I was lost and scared.
A very close friend suggested I take some days off because rest and recovery were just as important. I was so hesitant to take some time because I was sick of being fat. I was sick of being winded walking up three flights of stairs. I was sick of missing out on really enjoying my life.
I ended up taking a month off. For me, that was the big moment. I came back with a new mindset and was ready to go after my dreams in a new way. That was when all the changes started to happen. The extra pounds and mental baggage were starting to release. There was a new fire in me and not anyone was going to stop me anymore…especially myself.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in kettlebells, steel mace, and TRX. I am currently teaching group fitness classes at TruFusion in Scottsdale. I currently teach Kettlebooty classes four times a week and TRX once a week.
I am known for my energy, dancing around, singing and motivation.
I am most proud of my desire to continually be a student myself. The more I learn about myself, the more I can help others.
What sets me apart is that I am me. I am consistently doing work to get to know myself on the deepest of levels. No other trainer/coach/fitness instructor is like me. You’ll have to come to check out one of my classes to really know what sets me apart.
I also teach private swimming lessons during the Summer. I specialize in the kiddos who are scared of the water. We have lots of fun and they get to learn about water and become confident. It is really amazing to see the transformation. After ten years of experience and thousands of kiddos splashing around with me, it is new every time.
What role has luck had in your life and business?
I believe in the power of manifesting. Thoughts become things. If I am thinking low energy thoughts, that is the type of people and circumstances I will bring into my life. When my thoughts are high and positive, those kinds of people and situations show up. Once I realized I have the power to create the life I want through my thoughts, the sky became the limit.
