Today we’d like to introduce you to Mina Caldera.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always loved art since I was young, although I never really felt like I had an audience for my work or felt like my work was as advanced as my peers, I’ve always tried my best to create pieces that convey my innermost secrets and emotions. I have done nearly every type of art, from the performing arts, to ceramics, and to mixed media, and there was always something about them I enjoyed. It was not until I reached my later years of high school that I learned that no artist is the same and that each has their own strengths and weaknesses. By learning this, I became more confident in my work and my ability to be successful within the art world.
Please tell us about your art.
I love to create art because I always feel as if I have something to say that I cannot accurately convey with just my words. I make poems, songs, zines, paintings, ceramics, and other forms of mixed media. My inspiration comes from artists that use personal aspects of themselves within their work, leading to a deeper emotional connection within their audience. Usually, the messages within my pieces are one that are affecting me deeply during the time I was making the piece, typically ones that deal with my anxieties, sadness, heartbreak, and insecurities. I hope that when people view my work, they feel an emotional connection with it, I kind of want the connection to be so intense that they might cry from realization or the sense that what I am feeling is in common with their own emotions. I want people to know that each piece has a part of me in it, a secret that I want the world to see.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I think that artists have always had a role of portraying an item or topic in a way that will stick to the viewer and make them think deeper about the subject. I do not think that this role has changed, but only the subjects that we as artists choose to emphasize. The current events that occur around the world affect my art by making me want to broadcast what people are feeling during times of crisis or fear and that these feelings are widespread.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
As of right now I am not in any current exhibitions and am very bad at updating others about my artistic progress. I do have an art Instagram @frutajugo that I will update occasionally when I take a picture of my work. I also run an online store with my sister (which I am also bad at updating) at spacefruit.storenvy.com. If anyone would like to support my work I would simply encourage them to dm me on my Instagram and let me know that they enjoy it!! It really brings me more motivation. You can also buy items from my store or my original pieces from my art page. My main Instagram account has links to both my store Instagram and my art insta!
