Meet Mike Nagel of Vomaris Innovations in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Nagel.

Mike, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have over 30 years experience in the medical device market, beginning as a sales representative at Abbott Labs. From there I moved into sales and marketing management, with increasing levels of leadership responsibility. As President and CEO of Vomaris Innovations, Inc., this is my fourth emerging growth company for which I have had a significant leadership role.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My road is probably no different than what you might hear from an entrepreneur. My successes and failures have been vast, but in the end, I have been fortunate to count more wins than losses. I have always tried to view the sacrifices required to be successful in start-up companies as an investment in future gains, as opposed to an arduous struggle. Success or failure is not an endpoint to me, rather part of the process of continuous improvement and building maximum value for patients, employees, and shareholders.

Vomaris specializes in wireless electric field-generating technologies that are redefining regeneration, healing, and recovery. The company name is derived from nature’s remarkable ability to generate electricity when voltage potential (Vo) combines with a conductive medium like saline (mar, meaning the ‘sea’ in Spanish). What were you like growing up?
I was always very industrious. As the youngest of four brothers, my parents both ran their own small business. As such, I had excellent role models. They enabled me to envision how to create something from little or nothing, and importantly, learn a strong work ethic and the critical value of resilience. We became a family of entrepreneurs; my three older brothers are also either heading up or have significant ownership in their own companies.

As a child, I always had a job. Starting with delivering papers for the Minneapolis Star Tribune at 10 years old, I ‘progressed’ to mowing lawns, was a janitor at a meat store, and then a hotel bellman through my college years. I was willing and able to work hard.

Outside of work, I found a passion for endurance athletics. I have completed seven Ironman Triathlons, twelve marathons, and am attempting my first ultra 50-mile running race this November. I find that training for endurance sports is similar to business – you start with the end in mind. But perhaps the most critical elements are the incremental steps you must take on a daily basis to get to that end goal. In a sense, you get used to being “comfortable being uncomfortable”, which builds your resilience. I find this helps me in business to not be overwhelmed with the sometimes perceived enormity of various tasks. I know I just need to get things done, one step at a time.
