Meet Mike Kelly of Papa Bear’s Churro Butter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Kelly.

Hi Mike, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We started Papa Bear’s in 2016 with the idea of making a Pecan based nut butter spread for people who love to be healthy but also appreciate a little indulgence. We use clean, healthy, low glycemic index sweeteners (sparingly) and have a unique roasting process that builds the flavor profile of our product. Our Churro Butter product capitalizes on an underserved pecan butter and pecan butter spread market while serving our customers a nutrient dense product built on the power of pecans. The business is run by my wife and I out of Phoenix after originally building the business out of the Los Angeles area.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s certainly been bumpy! We have no traditional food background. We’re not chefs or food scientists. We’re two people who have found a way to build a delicious product solely on our love for healthy, nutrient dense food. Of course we’ve had (and continue to have!) struggles along the way but that’s the nature of entrepreneurship!

We’ve been impressed with Papa Bear’s Churro Butter, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Papa Bear’s was originally built out of a love for peanut butter. We always wondered why there were Peanut Butters, Almond Butters, and Cashew Butters all readily available on shelves nationwide but why pecans, in our opinion the most delicious nut, were seemingly excluded from the main stream.

From there, we dug into our Jersey Shore roots where we remember walking the boardwalk and smelling that familiar candied pecan smell that we all love. We asked ourselves, how do we capture that flavor in a spread?

After much trial and error, we concocted a recipe that captured that unique flavor profile without high volumes of sugars and sweeteners. Papa Bear’s is our life’s work and our passion. We believe once Churro Butter hits your lips, you’ll be a fan forever.

What matters most to you? Why?
In business, LABEL TRANSPARENCY. One of the things that drives us crazy about the CPG industry is how many businesses and brands hide behind fancy labels and marketing to disguise the ingredients they’re adding to their cheaply made products.
