Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Gulbas.
Michelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for nutrition began with a book I read in my mid-twenties called Healthy Aging by Dr. Weil which explains the myriad of things we can do to keep our bodies and minds in good working order through all phases of life. After this read, I immediately started to apply some of the dietary changes from the book in my own life and soon after, noticed huge changes in my own health.
This drove me to want to know more, and one book turned into many nutrition-related books and journals. I couldn’t get enough! This is when I decided I to go back to school and stumbled upon a holistic nutrition program that I would be able to do at night. During those two years, I was able to apply some of the knowledge with both staff and students at the school I was teaching at. That’s when I knew I found my purpose. I always loved teaching but wanted to teach about a subject I was passionate about. Fast- forward a few years after starting a family and balancing life, I furthered my education by becoming a certified health coach so I could work with families on healthy eating habits. I felt like since it was what I was living and breathing daily, it was the perfect audience to share the successes that have worked with my own family. In addition, I was able to use my background and experience as an elementary school teacher for 10 years.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting my own business was the furthest thing from my mind but after landing a few clients to work with and teaching some workshops around the valley, it kind of unfolded organically.
With that being said, there’s definitely times where I feel with every step forward, there are a few steps back. It’s not easy to have a business when balancing life with young kids and making sure the home- front is taken care of!
One thing I do know is that when I have the time to put more work and effort in, the more successful I am!
All in all, it has been a pretty smooth road considering this was a hobby- turned business.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Eat Well With Michelle – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a certified family health coach specializing in nutrition for both women and children. I teach workshops around the valley and I work with families to making healthy eating fun by doing in-home nutrition counseling. I also do grocery store tours teaching parents how to read nutrition labels and navigate the aisles for healthier brands. What sets me apart is I can relate to other “busy” moms with picky eaters at home, and know what they need in terms of simple, on-the-go options. I’ve done the research and put together lists of the healthiest brands of kids’ snacks and kitchen staples on the market and continually update it (these include food allergy-friendly options!). Moms love this!
I pride myself on focusing on the “individual” client, meeting her or her family where they are in their health journey, setting realistic goals. It’s all about baby steps! I also emphasize gut health instead of fad diets to create life-long changes.
I’m most proud of the reset cleanse that I created to help curb sugar cravings, incorporate more greens into the diet and nourish the gut. This 2-week clean-eating program has helped many with their weight loss goals, and have created healthier long term habits. It includes tons of yummy recipes too! No starving here.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Traveling with my family. Going to Rocky Point, Mexico with my family every summer was something I always looked forward to. I also have the most fond memories of going to my grandpas house in Santa Rosa and visiting my dad’s side of the family in France.
