Meet Michelle Alexander of XanderVision Medical Consultants & East Valley Moms Blog in East Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Alexander.

Michelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My husband, Jason was encouraged by executives from his old company to start a distributorship. He battled with the decision for nine months and then sat down to talk to me about it. I said to him, “you have never made a decision based on fear, why would you start now?” He asked me to help him and I said of course (I already had started East Valley Moms Blog with another business partner but had to support my spouse). He resigned from his company the next day.

The next few months would be Jason learning how to be self-employed and myself jumping in and learning about systems in business I had never experienced before like processing PO’s and utilizing QuickBooks. And that was just the start. After almost two years from making that decision, my husband, Jason is the Distributor Principal and I am the Director of Operations. Our little team of two is now a team of seven. We officially hired our first employee this year to add to our existing team of contractors and we are still growing.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest struggle is being a husband and wife team. We have to always remember to keep relationship conversations out of business and vice versa. We do this pretty well and sometimes things can’t help but cross over but we make it work, additionally making mistakes along the way. It is hard to not get wrapped up in the blame game because both of us are goal orientated and hate making mistakes. I think the success comes in learning to own it, fix it and move on.

Meeting goals is always a struggle. It can get to the point where you forget to turn it off and enjoy life at the end of the day. When you live with your business partner, it gets easy to discuss work or check emails when you should be winding down for the night.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the XanderVision Medical Consultants & East Valley Moms Blog story. Tell us more about the business.
XanderVision is a small business that specializes in medical device sales. I run the business operations from making sure everyone gets paid, handling all of the financials and accounting, checks and balances of collected purchase orders and all licensing, registration and admin requirements. I hope to get involved with more of a rep role soon.

My husband is the one who makes sales calls, gives instruction on device use in the operating room, and develops client relationships. He also has direct contact with the team, ensuring everyone is on their game and making their quotas. We specialize in spine and biologics.

I am most proud of how we treat our “work family” and the level of service that we provide to our surgeons. We pride ourselves in that we are a small business growing something amazing and we hope that keeping that level of intimacy is what sets us apart. Our team and our surgeons know that they will be part of a company and its growth and that is exciting. To be able to look back and say “I remember when….” is very rewarding.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We are faithful people so we don’t believe in luck. We have both worked really hard in life to get where we are from very humble upbringings. Everything that we have experienced or accomplished has been a sheer blessing. I think when we were younger and struggling to pay rent in a condo in Carmel Valley, CA when everyone else around us were so established in their life and careers, encouraged us. It gave us the drive to make sure that we were able to set up a legacy for our children and that is what I believe starting XanderVision is allowing us to do.

If I were to say luck had any part in anything, I would say we were lucky to get people on our team with amazing compatibility. It makes it easier.
