Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Moody.
Michael, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been full of opinions (some that are in line with most and others that are from a different perspective and not as popular). I was approached about doing a podcast about 4 years ago and had about 4 episodes with a cohost. It was difficult from a time perspective matching schedules to record and edit audio so it kind of fizzled out however, we did have a good response to our short lived podcast. I tried another podcast with a cohost and the same problems persisted and I see I was not able to get my points across clearly so after about 6 episodes we called that one quits also. I then decided that I would do a one man show and the “Expert on Everything” was born. This gave me the flexibility to record and edit at my leisure and speak on topics that I wanted to speak on and also allowed me to get my thoughts out completely. I named it “Expert on Everything” because a lot of people say “you think you know everything”, I just played on their words. I talk sports, politics, current events, and also do tribute episodes, full of facts and full of hot takes. I take the opportunity to teach when I record, you may not agree with everything I say, but you at least have to give it a critical thought and that’s really all I can ask for. The one-man approach has been successful and had more support than I could have imagined, I like to consider my avid listeners “my fellow experts”.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been relatively smooth since I figured out a formula that works for me, I knew I could not have an hour and a half podcast with one person talking so I started out in early episodes right around 30 minutes as we have progressed and listeners have been asking for more content I do most episodes around 40-45 minutes. I also have some interviews and guest appearances and those do reach the hour and a half mark. For the most part it has been a good run since I started the one man show.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Expert on Everything Podcast story. Tell us more about your podcast.
The “Expert on Everything” podcast to me is a vehicle to teach and I specialize in educating I want people to be as knowledgeable as possible when it comes to this precarious world that we live in. The proudest thing for me that this podcast has done is spark my creative juices to start writing short films as another vehicle to educate and empower. Most notably is a short film I am currently in the midst of writing that will be released this fall called “What If”. The film is based on African Americans who have achieved great feats in the face of oppression and marginalization, and what America maybe could have looked like had it not been for desegregation. The thing that sets me apart from other podcasters is I give meaningful content that will resonate long after I have left this earth, some things I speak on may even be clearer in distant future my work and words will be timeless and not a point in time like 98% of podcast and media content today.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
This industry has already started to shift! I think if I had this formula 4 years ago right out of the gate who knows where I could be. Podcast were not as popular then as they are now, seems like everyone has one and now individuals with built in platforms are jumping into this space. In the next 5-10 years though I see podcasters with meaningful content rising to the top of this industry and I plan on being there!
