Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Farris.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michael. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Last year I started a podcast called “Coffee and a Mike.” I felt for a long time I was one of those people that had all of these great ideas but would never do anything about it. Each day/week/month/year would pass, and I would be doing the same old routines and wondering “what if” I did this or did that. So last year with the advice of my friends Rich, Nicole, Kenji, Michael, Bryon, my mother, uncle, and my cousin David, I started working on this podcast. Kenji and I would meet every Sunday to test my audio equipment. I would sit down with people turn the microphone on and record our conversations.
Everything was great, but I needed a name for the podcast. My friend Bryon texted me “Coffee and a Mike.” I ran it past my friend Nicole, and when she liked it, I knew that was it. Once we got everything going, I was trying to figure out what kind of identity or theme I wanted the podcast to be about. I wasn’t an expert in one thing, so I felt kind of stuck. But then listening to one of the biggest podcasts out there, Joe Rogan, I realized that my variety of interests are what I should target with a recurring theme. People that are “doers and not sayers.” So, I started reaching out to people asking if they would be interested in coming on. I honestly did not think anyone would say yes!
However, most people agreed to come on, and I now have 26 podcasts complete with the guests ranging from multiple doctors in psychology to a health and wellness physician. I interviewed an acupuncturist who was an Air Force Academy graduate that was notified of her entry by the late Senator John McCain. Other guests include a man that does not see color, a boxing hall of fame trainer, newly elected Governor of Nevada, a Cirque Du Soleil performer, a World Series hitting coach, a minor league baseball pitcher, the MMA head coach of the UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic, a boxing hall of fame publicist, and three individuals who are bi-polar.
My guests cover a wide range, to say the least; from heavy metal singer, an artist who has his work in the Louvre, to a filmmaker. A Harvard graduate who got a degree in cognitive neuroscience and ends up a writer/producer for the Simpsons. An Eastern Michigan graduate who becomes a visual effects producer for 20th Century Fox. The Sheriff of Pinal County. Three ultra runners, one of whom owns an awesome pizzeria in Flagstaff. A very fast-growing meadery in Northern Arizona to finally, an innovator of an all-natural anti-chafing skin product.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think if anything is smooth everyone would do it. Some struggles so far is accepting the fact A) thinks take time, B) be patient, C) Believe in yourself. Which we all hear over and over again but being that I am a very impatient person some things take time and as long you are moving in the right direction consistently you will grow. Whether it is a little or a lot and some weeks you might stay the same or even decline, but you do not let that get you down. Some people I thought would be huge supporters are not that includes family.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am known for being an outgoing person who treats people the same way I would like to be treated. In my podcast, I am most proud of the fact that my brand is truly who I am as a person. A person that wants to put good content out for people and not limited to one area or niche. Some people might not like or prefer certain topics, but there is something for everyone.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a talkative, extroverted child. I always wanted to be in some type of sales. One of my first jobs was going door to door selling candy bars. I loved movies and sports.
In particular, growing up in northeast Ohio I loved everything Cleveland. So I would go to see the Cleveland Indians, Cavaliers, and Browns as much as possible.
My mom and I would spend the summers going to as many movies as we could. I was a huge Star Wars, Star Trek, 80’s classics, and any type of superhero themes.
