Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Elting.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started out working many jobs in Corporate America but not any that I was truly passionate about. I was a collector for Chase Bank and American Express. I tried the military, got an honorable medical discharge. Worked as a security guard, clothing retail, barista property manager and caregiver. I worked temporary jobs: pet sitter, personal assistant, Uber and Lyft Driver. I was a flight attendant ( my childhood dream). I always felt as if I never really belonged in those companies but they were a means to an end because I was a single mother who needed the income. I moved us around a lot, Washington, Oregon and Utah, again trying to see where I could fit in. All the instability and moving around and the stress of not fitting in took its toll on my emotional state of mind and my physical health.
Meeting my husband, getting married and finding stability was exactly what I needed. He’s very supportive and when he saw the toll on my health finding a career had taken on me, he suggested I pursue my passions instead. So with that and also hearing confirmation from a sermon at church one day I decided to combine my 3 passions, baking, pets and community!
On our way home from Church, a song came on the radio that was a favorite of mine, Humble & Kind” by Tim McGraw just as I was asking myself “What should I call the business?…”. With that Humble & Kind was born the following week and I was on fire and wouldn’t you know?? My health improved right away!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I had the challenges of being a single mom and depending on Corporate America for income that I didn’t think I could ever make on my own. I struggled with low self-esteem, aging and health problems like anxiety, depression and panic attacks.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Humble & Kind is focused on providing all-natural, homemade, quality treats for cats & dogs. We custom make orders for pets that have allergies and take pride that our treats are never frozen! We’re also different in the way that we have goals to give back to our community such as foster care organizations (as I was a foster child). We also include homeless shelters, veterans, dog and cat rescues and other Christian organizations.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success when I can end my day knowing I did something that I am passionate about, that I made a difference in my community and that I put out a quality product.
