Meet Merle Flores of ENG 2 SPA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Merle Flores.

Hi Merle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I guess deep down, I had always wanted to build something of my own. Who doesn’t like the idea of being their own boss or setting their own pay? However, it wasn’t till I was jobless that I started contemplating the idea of creating a translation business. I figured I was not only good at translating, but I actually enjoyed it, the whole thing, from beginning to end. The problem was that I had no idea where to start. So I went where many look for others’ knowledge, YouTube. After hours worth of videos, I ended up more anxious and coufused, but my curiosity was still beating. Then, I asked myself what I had to lose, so I went for it.

So in June of 2022, with God’s grace, my parent’s help, and my husband’s constant support, ENG 2 SPA LLC was born.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a learning process, just like everything else. It’s a lot of reading, watching videos, and talking with people.

The more you do it, the more you learn from others, saving yourself time, money, and some mistakes.

Some of the struggles I’ve faced as a business owner is not having a constant income, some weeks I don’t get a customer at all, while some I may get three in a single day! So, one must plan and have some money available to cover those days when there’s no work. Something else that some may consider a struggle (I think it’s normal at the beginning) is working long hours and just being willing to invest and give your all.

We’ve been impressed with ENG 2 SPA LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
ENG 2 SPA offers English-to-Spanish translation, local on-site interpretation, editing and proofing of external translations, and virtual Spanish tutoring. We operate remotely, except when we provide on-site interpretation. In such cases, I do most of the interpreting at either medical appointments, FCEs, legal consultations, business training, or non-profits, here in the valley.

As for the online part, ENG 2 SPA translates all kinds of documents by hand, and although effective, we don’t use any CAT tools. I personally read, translate, edit, and proof every translation. Whether it’s formal or informal text, you can be certain the translation you receive is accurate and unique, as we not only convey your message but also your feeling and intentions.

I also do all Spanish tutoring, either through Zoom or Microsoft Teams. I’m a native Spanish speaker, born and raised in Mexico, and I enjoy teaching and helping others learn. I think being bilingual has opened a lot of doors for me, and I would like to help others acquire Spanish as one of their languages.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see it growing. Despite how fast technology advances, we always seek human connection, and whether it’s written or verbal, ENG 2 SPA offers exactly that.

I see us having a steady flow of customers and jobs, therefore, I see ENG 2 SPA having a bigger staff and a number of contractors. I see us collaborating on projects for some of the big brands.
