Meet Meredith McClaren

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith McClaren.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a comic artist. Originally, I thought I’d go into animation, but I soon found I didn’t have the patience for it. Comics let me tell a story a little faster. So I switched majors and attended as many editor reviews as possible. A few years later, ONI PRESS gave me my first shot. And I’ve been hustling ever since.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. Comics is a real feast or famine industry. You can be swamped with work for a few months and then struggling to get projects the next few. It can really wear you down, and the best thing you can do is make your own work until someone asks you to contribute to theirs.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Meredith McClaren – what should we know?
I’m a freelance comic artist, so I draw comic books. Half the time they’re stories I wrote myself, the rest of the time I’ve teamed up with a writer.

I’m known for books like HINGES, HEART IN A BOX, HOPELESS SAVAGES v4, JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS v4, and REAL SCIENCE ADVENTURES: THE NICODEMUS JOB.

I’m proud of all my books for different reasons. I try to approach each project with something new. Either a change in the process or how I compose the page.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Stubbornness and self-determination.

There’s a lot of rejection in comics. You have to power through with more proposed projects or be prepared to do it all on your own. And it takes a lot of self-discipline to put a comic together, no matter what length, on your own volition.
