Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Good.
Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a small town girl from Maine who landed in Mesa after high school and have been here ever since! I have worked in Real Estate with developers building out many communities in Queen Creek and even was a part of the team who created Merchant Square in Chandler.
My favorite thing about all of these was helping businesses grow. Whether from the ground up or stepping in to help the project to up level and get completed, I loved seeing a project take on a life of its own and really get rolling!
For a number of years after working in real estate, I worked in the event industry for Christmas Light Decorators. I was hired to manage their website sales, and it quickly morphed into a little of everything! From graphic and web design (my passion), to overseas purchasing, warehouse management some days, bookkeeping other days, and a lot of online marketing, I learned many real-life skills that you don’t learn in college.
In this small business, I gained a passion for local businesses and loved helping them get unified marketing material from their print media to online websites. In 2014, the online arm of the company decided to rebrand and I was able to create a brand new E-Commerce site for them that within two years was hitting #2 on the first page Google searches for their ideal keywords nationwide.
I was also able to help them cut down their yearly inventory costs by more than half through better sourcing of their products.
One of the hardest decisions was leaving after 10 years to pursue my own passions of online marketing and website design.
But it has also been one of the best decisions as well.
Anyone who knows me, understands I am passionate about anything I do. When our family plays games, watch out! We are all extremely competitive and do our best to win.
The problem with where I was, was that I was wearing so many hats I couldn’t be superb at any on a thing (though my track record shows I accomplished a lot there!). I finally realized one day, after crashing my car, I needed to slow down and not be spread so thin in someone else’s business.
Amazingly, we both walked away fine from that accident and my Geico insurance took such good care of the guy I hit (who worked for another insurance company that shall not be named) that he calmed down and I got the wake-up call I needed.
And so, I decided to phase myself out and do what I was truly passionate about which is online marketing and helping growing companies present a professional look and easy to understand content to their leads and clients so they take action!
Geeked Out Media was born out of my passion for small business & online marketing.
I love helping companies create an up leveled online presence with their website and online marketing. The best part about coming from a working business who needed services like mine is that I know what it feels like in my client’s shoes! I am not creating hypothetical websites that just “look pretty”, though they look great too in my opinion, I am also creating marketing that works for the client.
You see I have been where my clients are. Remember Mobilegeddon in 2014? Well, the company I worked for got panicked and hired an outside website design company to build a mobile responsive site. Crazy that just four years ago mobile responsive was such a new thing that we all had to scramble to keep up with technology! I was asked by the owners if I knew how to build a mobile responsive site and at the time the answer was no.
The experience was a disaster for the company and really crushed their business that year because the company they worked with to design their site delayed months and months beyond what was promised and the site wasn’t converting.
After we got a site that didn’t convert and killed our ranking, my boss let me start from scratch with their online E-Commerce business. We also started this crazy content plan to blog about Christmas lights and within two years, this new website was #2 on the first page of Google when I checked its ranking the day I quit.
Yes, I quit.
The thing I learned from this experience was: 1 – I really was good at website design and online marketing and 2 – I never wanted to be behind the technology. I also never wanted to be a company that didn’t keep my promises or that people couldn’t get in touch with like the website design company we worked with!
I began my own business in 2017 working with small businesses building out their websites but quickly realized, they needed more than just a website. They needed a partner to help them know what to do with it long after the site was built!
See, you cannot just build a website and “POOF” it magically hits page 1 – it is a long, often hard process to gain traction in your business and it takes an understanding of that from the get-go, to make it through the bumps when you want to give up!
I don’t just build websites, I partner with my clients to help them grow their business and present a professional image to their clients.
So, today, I feel like I am helping many businesses grow and I get to be the proud momma in the background cheering them on when I see them succeed! There is nothing better than hearing from one of my clients that they got their first customer the week they launched or 100th client a year down the road!
I am passionate about not paying for promises but paying for results! It is hard in the online marketing industry because there are so many bad experiences out there that people are leary of working with another website designer who from their past experience may not stick around to complete the job they paid them in full for.
So, that is my mission – to change the way people see website & graphic designers as well as online marketing managers.
There really are some gems in the freelance world of people who are passionate and do amazing things. I love hearing from my clients that I went above and beyond what they expected or what their past designer did! And my favorite part is that we generally become good friends through the process, not every designer out there can do that!
I love that now I get to do what I am passionate about every day and help make a real difference in people’s lives as they build, grow, and scale their businesses.
I can’t wait to speak at The Business Revolution coming up on May 2nd & 3rd to help business owners realize how powerful their websites can be for their businesses!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not smooth! But totally worth it!
I bounced around business ideas for a number of years with my sister before I really took the leap! One idea that I loved, but we never could figure out how to make money with, was called the Clutter-Free Challenge – a free de-cluttering challenge that pulled in over 700 women the first 2 months we did it and they had such amazing results with our free challenge that they didn’t need us anymore!
After my accident, I knew it was time to stop toying with the idea of starting my own business and actually do it! So, I finally decided to just do what I was good at – branding, marketing, and design.
When I started Geeked Out Media I really struggled with the fear that this might not work and I just quit a steady, pretty good paying job! As a small business owner, it is up to YOU and you alone to ultimately make it happen for your business.
I would literally have to talk myself down from: 1 – panicking and getting stomach ulcers with the worry at night and 2 – getting a part-time job the first few months as I started to get my stride.
I finally did the 90 Day Year System in 2018 and gained the confidence that if I put in the work, I would have success – and I did! I started the year hoping to just cover the grocery bill for the month (and with teens that is no easy feat!) to tripling what I hoped to make!
From that system, I learned that “Hope Is Not A Strategy!” I stopped hoping clients would come along and instead started attending Networking events and being consistent with my OWN marketing and putting myself out there doing the things that would draw in clients rather than waiting for them to magically line up at my door!
No business is easy, but if you are doing what you love, it can be rewarding and enjoyable! I am so glad I started my own business again!
The coolest thing about this all is that at a recent workshop my sister and I held for female entrepreneurs one of our Clutter-Free Challenge ladies was there! It kind of came full circle on us. I am grateful for those early days that helped us gain the confidence to do live videos and not worry so much about what others thought.
Please tell us about Geeked Out Media.
I didn’t realize until I looked back at all my work for 2018 but nearly all of it came from referrals! I didn’t think much of it until someone pointed out that it is amazing that people trust me enough to refer their friends and family.
What sets me apart, and is part of why people are willing to refer, is my number one goal in my business is to under promise and over deliver. Again and again, clients tell me that they come to me because they know I will do what I say.
Too many businesses are out to make a quick buck, I want to be their online marketing partner for the life of their business so my reputation for doing what I say I will is paramount!
As a website and graphic designer, you can make or break someone’s business, so going above and beyond is kind of a big deal for me!
I want the people I work with to feel confident that THEY really can rock their business and be proud to send clients to their sites, put out marketing that gets attention and more importantly gets results.
I don’t just help them create a website, I help them create a unified brand they can be proud of.
One client said she was ashamed to even send clients to her site before she worked with me and now, she can’t help but direct people there!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would definitely have done the 90 Day Year sooner and created more systems from the start in my business.
When you are small, you can start to get lazy with processes and now that my business is growing I am regretting not having better processes in place!
I would also charge more for my services from the start – when you get started, you have a tendency to undervalue yourself or think you have to always be the cheapest and I realized (quickly) clients who pay a little more are generally the ones who are ready to roll with their rebranding and website design and take the process more seriously. As Thomas Paine once said, “What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly.” That has definitely been true of finding my clients and the pricing that fits my deliverables!
